About this role

Unpaid Legal Intern (Summer 2027 Cohort)

When you come to work for New Jersey Judiciary you will join an 8500-member strong TEAM that operates with the highest standards of independence, integrity, fairness and quality service. You will be engaged with work that has purpose, meaning and makes a difference in lives of the public we serve. We work hard every day to build the public’s trust and confidence in our court system, which includes issues such as bail reform, marijuana decriminalization and recovery court. Whether it be in a courtroom, an administrative office, a courthouse training room, an IT office or in the field, our Judiciary workforce is improving the lives of countless individuals and families every day. We honor the dignity and individualism of each member of our organization while fostering professionalism and continuous improvement in our work.

The Judiciary offers a strong opportunity for growth.

The Atlantic/Cape May Vicinage is recruiting students with an interest in law and justice for our Unpaid Legal Intern Program’s Summer 2027 Cohort. This is a structured, 9-week experience with our vicinage’s Superior Court Judges. Selected candidates will have the opportunity to learn many aspects of case processing and gain practical experience and valuable insight into the judicial process in our Civil, General Equity (Chancery), Criminal, and Family Divisions.

Selected candidates are expected to serve for the full duration of the summer program which will start on June 7, 2027, and conclude on August 6, 2027. Interns are expected onsite for a minimum of ten (10) hours per week during the program. Some travel within the multicounty vicinage is required as modules may be hosted in Atlantic City, Mays Landing, and Cape May Court House.

While preference will be given to candidates who are available for the entire 9-week program, applicants with limited availability may be considered for shortened unpaid legal intern opportunities depending on space and operational needs.

Ideal candidates will be organized, detailed-oriented individuals with excellent communication, interpersonal, legal research, and writing skills. Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel is helpful. Satisfactory completion of one year of law school or current enrollment as a first-year law student with substantial legal writing experience is strongly preferred.

Remote work: The Judiciary currently offers a hybrid work schedule, and this position may qualify for up to 2 days of remote work outside of Judiciary buildings. To participate in this program, in addition to installing a multifactor authentication app on your phone or tablet, you will be required to have high speed home internet access.
