About the Role Schmidt Sciences seeks a Technical Advisor to bridge cutting-edge scientific research and high-performance computing infrastructure. You will serve as the primary strategic liaison for Schmidt Sciences-funded researchers globally, across disciplines including climate, synthetic biology, astrophysics, and AI & advanced computing, to accelerate discovery through advanced compute resources.
What You'll Do
- Serve as the primary strategic liaison for Schmidt Sciences-funded researchers globally, coordinating GPU/AI/ML compute needs across disciplines.
- Evaluate complex GPU/AI/ML requirements and lead the technical onboarding to ensure successful deployment on diverse compute platforms.
- Lead onboarding and deployment initiatives, collaborating with researchers, engineers, and center leadership.
- Communicate complex technical concepts clearly to scientists and executive leadership.
- Drive time-to-first-result for computationally intensive projects and manage multiple programs in parallel.
- Potentially manage direct reports over time.
- Travel within the U.S. on a regular basis to engage with researchers and partners.
What We're Looking For
- Post-graduate degree in computer science, biology, climate, astrophysics, or related computational science.
- 8+ years of combined experience in AI/ML infrastructure and research-facing advisory roles.
- Experience with Slurm and Kubernetes for cluster workload management.
- Proven ability to accelerate grant-to-first-result timelines for computational projects.
- Strong cross-disciplinary communication skills for researchers and executive leadership.
- History of collaborative impact in high-pressure, team-based environments and a demonstrated sense of controlled urgency.
- High integrity and ability to maintain confidentiality; willingness to travel within the U.S.
- Deep understanding of tech stacks for designing, training, deploying, and maintaining production-scale AI models.
- Experience producing technical writing for both expert and general audiences.
Nice to Have
- PhD in a technical field (computer science, biology, climate, astrophysics, or related computational science).
- Grant & funding acumen and familiarity with data center storage and networking technologies.
- Proficiency with ML hosting frameworks (NVIDIA Dynamo, TensorFlow Serving, Ray) and leadership of data center infrastructure initiatives.
- Expertise in AI model performance monitoring, network/storage optimization, and broad cross-disciplinary translation of technical concepts.
- Experience working with philanthropic organizations or academic/government research institutions.
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary: $180,000 - $250,000 per year (exempt position).
