Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced, highly organised, and commercially minded Supermarket Operations Manager to oversee the daily operations of the supermarket and ensure smooth, efficient, and profitable business performance. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing staff, monitoring sales and inventory, ensuring excellent customer service, controlling operational costs, maintaining store standards, preventing losses, and ensuring that all departments operate efficiently. The ideal candidate should have strong leadership skills, excellent knowledge of retail operations, good financial awareness, and the ability to use data and operational reports to improve business performance.
Key Responsibilities
Daily Store Operations:
- Oversee the day to day operations of the supermarket.
- Ensure the store opens and closes on schedule and operates efficiently throughout the day.
- Ensure all departments, shelves, checkout points, storage areas, and customer areas are properly maintained.
- Establish and enforce standard operating procedures across the supermarket.
- Identify operational challenges and implement practical solutions.
- Ensure the supermarket maintains high standards of cleanliness, organisation, safety, and presentation.
- Coordinate with suppliers, service providers, contractors, and other external stakeholders when required.
Staff Management:
- Supervise and coordinate supermarket employees across various departments.
- Prepare and monitor staff schedules and shift arrangements.
- Ensure adequate staffing levels across departments.
- Monitor staff attendance, punctuality, productivity, and general conduct.
- Set performance expectations and monitor staff performance against agreed KPIs.
- Provide coaching and on the job training where necessary.
- Address employee performance and disciplinary issues in accordance with company policies.
- Foster a professional, productive, and customer focused work environment.
Sales and Revenue Management:
- Monitor daily, weekly, and monthly sales performance.
- Analyse sales reports to identify trends, high performing products, slow moving products, and revenue opportunities.
- Develop strategies to improve sales and increase average customer spend.
- Monitor the performance of promotions, discounts, and special offers.
- Ensure all products are correctly priced and displayed.
- Work with management to develop and implement sales targets.
- Monitor cashiers and checkout operations to minimise errors and revenue leakage.
Inventory and Stock Management:
- Oversee inventory management and ensure accurate stock records.
- Monitor stock levels and ensure timely replenishment of fast moving products.
- Coordinate regular stock counts and inventory reconciliation.
- Investigate and address stock discrepancies, damages, expiry, and unexplained losses.
- Monitor product expiry dates and ensure appropriate rotation of stock.
- Ensure proper receiving, storage, handling, and display of products.
- Identify slow moving and obsolete inventory and recommend appropriate actions.
- Work closely with procurement and suppliers to maintain appropriate stock levels.
Procurement and Supplier Management:
- Monitor supplier performance and ensure timely delivery of products.
- Verify delivered goods against purchase orders and delivery documentation.
- Ensure suppliers meet agreed quality, pricing, and delivery standards.
- Escalate supplier issues to management where necessary.
- Support negotiations with suppliers when required.
- Maintain accurate records of supplier transactions and outstanding orders.
Financial and Cost Control:
- Monitor operational expenses and ensure spending remains within approved budgets.
- Identify areas of unnecessary expenditure and recommend cost saving measures.
- Monitor daily cash collections and ensure proper reconciliation.
- Work with the finance team to investigate revenue and cash discrepancies.
- Monitor gross margin and product profitability where applicable.
- Ensure company resources are used responsibly.
- Implement measures to minimise waste, shrinkage, theft, and operational losses.
Customer Experience:
- Ensure customers receive excellent service throughout their shopping experience.
- Monitor customer complaints and ensure timely resolution.
- Identify recurring customer concerns and recommend improvements.
- Ensure staff maintain professional and courteous interactions with customers.
- Monitor queue management and checkout efficiency.
- Develop initiatives that improve customer satisfaction and retention.
Loss Prevention and Security:
- Implement and enforce measures to reduce theft, fraud, wastage, and stock losses.
- Monitor unusual transactions, inventory discrepancies, and suspicious activities.
- Work closely with security personnel to maintain a safe shopping environment.
- Ensure CCTV and other security systems are functioning effectively where applicable.
- Investigate reported cases of theft, fraud, or operational misconduct and escalate appropriately.
Compliance and Safety:
- Ensure the supermarket complies with relevant health, safety, food handling, and retail requirements.
- Ensure proper storage and handling of food and other sensitive products.
- Conduct regular checks of equipment, facilities, and store infrastructure.
- Ensure health and safety procedures are understood and followed by staff.
- Maintain appropriate records for inspections, incidents, and compliance activities.
Reporting and Performance Management:
