About the Role GSI is seeking a Senior Environmental Specialist to join our growing Professional Services team in Washington, DC. You will oversee environmental risk mitigation across the full program scope for a major government program and construction management team, coordinating with stakeholders and contractors to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations.
What You'll Do
- Develop and implement environmental management plans.
- Coordinate with regulatory agencies, municipalities, and other stakeholders.
- Schedule and supervise environmental surveys and construction compliance inspections with staff and subcontractors.
- Provide compliance oversight and ensure contractors have required federal, state, and local approvals and permits.
- Oversee preparation of environmental reports by GSI and subcontractors.
- Attend meetings on environmental approvals and concerns; prepare subject matter expertise as needed.
- Develop a comprehensive NEPA compliance strategy, including selecting the appropriate level of NEPA review for each action.
- Assist and prepare programmatic EA analyzing potential environmental impacts of the facilities master plan, and considering alternatives.
- Conduct detailed environmental analyses of the first phase of the master plan for specific projects.
- Engage with the public and stakeholders: draft public notices, attend meetings, and assist drafting responses to public comments.
- Coordinate and consult with federal, state, and local agencies.
- Prepare NEPA documentation as necessary for an EIS.
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or related discipline.
- Minimum 10 years of experience preparing NEPA documentation, conducting environmental analyses, and coordinating with federal, state, and local agencies.
- Proven experience in NEPA compliance strategy, Programmatic EAs, First Phase Environmental Analysis, NEPA documentation, and agency/stakeholder coordination.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to manage multiple project teams.
Nice to Have
- Deep familiarity with environmental standards, procedures, and approval processes.
- Experience coordinating with authorities and clients on environmental permitting and construction compliance monitoring.
- Ability to communicate complex environmental topics clearly.
