Position Title Program Manager

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Associate Director of Student Life and Engagement, the incumbent advises and provides leadership to a major student organization or group of organizations, who are integrated into the student organizational structure, but are responsible to a legally authorized body other than the department.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coordinate all programs in assigned area of responsibility, which may from time to time include major undertakings which require extensive planning, negotiation, problem solving and follow-through;
  • Advise and assist assigned student group(s) in planning and managing their policies, programs and general operations, in accordance with College policies and procedures, statutes, and the guidelines and rules of the legally authorized governing body; such matters include program and policy development, goal setting, fiscal and risk management, maintenance of legal records and documents, personnel matters, recruitment, public relations and marketing, academic standards, disciplinary codes and other applicable issues;
  • Participate in the development of marketing strategies to promote campus activities and services to maximize student involvement.
  • Develop and maintain an appropriate relationship with the student groups within the College, while respecting the autonomy legally accorded such an organization(s);
  • Responsible for thorough knowledge of applicable policies, regulations and laws, including those of the legally authorized governing body; monitor compliance with and provide guidance regarding such policies, regulations and laws;
  • Serve as a resource to assigned student group(s) and as liaison with other College and external groups, including the governing organization(s);
  • Maintain regular contact with student leaders to resolve problems and develop responsible decision-making, assess student interests, respond to student needs, and anticipate student programming/leadership issues;
  • Identify goals and resources necessary to promote the effectiveness of the group(s);
  • Design, develop, and present training programs that meet the specific leadership needs of assigned student group(s); such as Camp jaguar and the Registered Student Organizational Manual
  • May be responsible for one or more services or programs which serve the department as a whole;
  • Participate in overall department activities, such as evaluation and development of overall programs and policies, outreach programs or promotional activities; recommends improvements or changes to increase effectiveness or meet changing needs;
  • Serve as a Student Life and Engagement representative on committees, task forces, and professional associations and conferences.
  • Assist in the general maintenance of the Manley Student Center.
  • Establish programs policies, procedures and objectives for Student Development programs. Investigate best practices for the student life office and campus processes and policies for supporting student leadership development
  • Create and collaborate on the development and facilitation of workshops, trainings and dialogues for departments and organizations across campus on student leadership and engagement.
  • Assist in the development, facilitation and implementation of initiatives for students from all social identities on issues of sexual orientation, gender expression, and gender diversity.
  • Collects and compiles data on activities of the Office of Student Life to ensure consistency in practices, inclusiveness in planning, and equity in services.
  • Participate in professional development and growth opportunities in order to maintain current knowledge of student development and student learning research, theory and practice that best serve the needs of all students.
  • Build strategic and collaborative partnerships with college departments and programs in support of students in issues related to gender, consent, sexual orientation, and sexuality (including Residence Life & Housing, Student Health, Counseling Center, Greek Life, etc.)

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of three years of directly related experience are required.

The incumbent must have an understanding of leadership, development, and programming as it relates to the holistic development of students; and knowledge of marketing/publicity strategies. The duties of this position require experience with specific programming for college students; leadership, training and advising student organizations; expertise with contract negotiations; special event planning, and major entertainment productions. The incumbent must have excellent leadership, organizational and programming skills. Interpersonal, counseling and communication skills are very important. This position requires familiarity with state and local policies, procedures, regulations and laws pertaining to the assignee’s student group(s). Demonstrated knowledge of budgeting and fiscal management is also required. The incumbent of this position must be willing to work irregular and flexible hours.

This work requires excellent written and oral skills. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret documents such as by-laws, operation and procedural manuals, and professional business periodicals/reports. The incumbent must have the ability to write reports, business correspondence, and policies/procedure manuals. The work also requires the ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from parents, students, faculty, staff, constituents of the College, and the public in a group or one-on-one basis.

To perform this fob successfully, an individual must have advanced skills using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) which includes creating flyers; typing letters/memos and e-mails; creating spreadsheets that include formulas; presentations plus things such as creating brochures, creating tables, newsletters, graphs, and forms.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in Student Personnel, Higher Education or related field is preferred. Experience with supporting and managing HBCU Greek Life and Pageantry events preferred.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to: stand, walk, sit, use hands and arms to reach, and operate the computer and other office equipment, stoop, talk and hear, and regularly lift and/or move up to 15 pounds. The employee is occasionally required to: climb. Specific vision abilities required by this job include the ability to adjust focus.
