About the Role The Manager, Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) – Japan leads and drives the site EHS strategy, regulatory compliance, risk management, and continuous improvement programs to ensure a safe, healthy, and environmentally responsible workplace. This role partners closely with site leadership, operations, engineering, facilities, HR, and corporate functions to integrate EHS excellence into business operations, support operational resilience, and strengthen a proactive safety culture aligned with Western Digital’s global standards and sustainability commitments. What You'll Do
- Lead the site EHS function and align programs with Western Digital objectives, site priorities, and Japan regulatory requirements.
- Ensure regulatory compliance across occupational safety, environmental protection, waste management, and chemical management.
- Drive risk management, hazard identification, risk assessment, and control programs to reduce operational risk and prevent injuries and environmental incidents.
- Manage occupational safety and health programs (machine safety, contractor safety, ergonomics, industrial hygiene, emergency response, and health risk control).
- Lead chemical and environmental management (chemical safety, hazardous materials control, waste governance, wastewater, air emissions, pollution prevention).
- Strengthen emergency preparedness, response, and business continuity (drills, chemical spill readiness, fire protection coordination) and support recovery planning.
- Lead management systems and audit readiness (ISO 14001, ISO 45001, internal EHS systems) including audit prep and corrective actions.
- Partner with cross-functional leadership to integrate EHS requirements into operations, projects, and organizational decisions.
- Drive continuous improvement and performance excellence through EHS metrics, trend analysis, and CAPA.
- Develop people and strengthen EHS culture through coaching, training, succession planning, and leadership engagement. What We're Looking For
- Bachelor’s degree or higher.
- 8-10+ years of EHS / environmental / sustainability experience.
- Deep knowledge of Japan regulatory requirements and international safety standards.
- Lead Auditor for ISO 45001 and ISO 14001.
- Experience in manufacturing, high-tech, or industrial operations at a site level.
- Native Japanese level, business English proficiency. Nice to Have
- Science/Engineering degree (mechanical, safety engineering, environmental science, chemistry).
- Fire prevention and disaster management qualifications or equivalent knowledge.
- Strong ability to build relationships, coordinate, and communicate across functions.
- Ability to work autonomously and proactively; strong multi-tasking and team collaboration. Compensation & Benefits
- Salary range: 900万円 ~ 1200万円 (想定年収) with final determination based on experience and skills.
- Location: Fujisawa, Kanagawa, Japan.
