About the Role As Legal Director, Hardware Engineering, Procurement, Software Development Engineering and R&D, you will oversee legal support for the Hardware Engineering, Procurement, Software Development Engineering and R&D functions in Japan. You will lead a team and collaborate with regional legal and business teams to build an influential, business-integrated legal function. This role combines hands-on legal work with people leadership and strategic governance for PlayStation’s Japan operations.
What You'll Do
- Provide legal support for hardware design and development, procurement, software development, R&D, information security and IT functions in Japan, including drafting, reviewing, and negotiating contracts (English and Japanese), conducting legal risk assessments, and delivering strategic legal advice.
- Partner with other regional legal teams to address geopolitical and regulatory risks and align on global standards.
- Provide legal counsel and decision-making support to senior management and engineering leaders.
- Lead, mentor and develop the legal team, overseeing performance management and organizational development.
- Collaborate with business leaders to align legal strategy with business goals and enable innovation.
What We're Looking For
- MUST: 15+ years of corporate/legal experience (in-house) with a multinational company; experience drafting, reviewing and negotiating contracts in Japanese and English, including direct negotiation with major international counterparts.
- Experience providing legal risk analysis for products, services, and business initiatives; cross-functional project leadership in a global environment.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to influence executives and diverse stakeholders.
- Ability to simplify complex issues and provide strategic, cross-regional solutions.
Preferred qualifications:
- Legal experience in the technology industry.
- Licensed attorney in Japan or another jurisdiction.
- Overseas work or study experience.
- Experience managing multinational teams.
