About the Role Schmidt Sciences invites recent PhD graduates in AI and computer science to apply for a 12-18 month fellows-in-residence program, reporting to the Director of the AI Institute. Fellows would split their time between supporting the AI Institute and pursuing research projects aligned with the Institute’s priorities; up to four fellows will be hired in 2026. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. For this cohort, we are most interested in hiring experts in the following domains: AI agent inter-operability and emerging communication in multi-agent systems; AI for scientific discovery; Hardware-enabled verification of AI agreements; AI’s impact on the labor market; Science of trustworthy AI and alignment.
What You'll Do
- Propose and execute specific research projects aligned with AI Institute goals, including potential grantmaking initiatives; split time between project work and AI Institute duties; collaborate with the Institute to design and launch programs; read and assess research proposals in AI; participate in the exploration and design of new AI grantmaking programs (interpretability, safety, and scientific discovery); attend gatherings for grantees and represent Schmidt Sciences at conferences.
- Support the AI Institute by reading and assessing proposals, helping design and launch new grantmaking programs, and contributing to workshops, papers, and open-source projects as appropriate.
What We're Looking For
- Recent PhD graduates in AI and computer science with strong publications and a track record of impactful research.
- Expertise in one or more of the Institute’s priority domains: AI agent inter-operability and emerging communication in multi-agent systems; AI for scientific discovery; Hardware-enabled verification of AI agreements; AI’s impact on the labor market; Science of trustworthy AI and alignment.
- Ability to propose, execute, and complete research projects within a 12-18 month fellowship, and to contribute to grantmaking discussions and initiatives.
- Alignment with AI Institute priorities, ability to work in a cross-disciplinary, nonprofit environment, and willingness to spend time at a local university in New York.
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary: USD 150,000 per year; Exempt position.
- Duration: 12-18 months; up to four fellows in 2026.
- Resources and Opportunities: up to $50,000 of compute credits and API credits; up to $50,000 in funding for targeted convenings, workshops, and working sessions; travel funds to collaborate with others; access to Schmidt Science’s network of stakeholders in the AI ecosystem.
