About the Role Under general supervision, the Deputy Sheriff performs technical law enforcement and investigative duties for Navajo County. The role includes patrol, emergency response, investigations, court participation, training, and community outreach, with opportunities to take on supervisory and Field Training Officer responsibilities as assigned.

What You'll Do

• Patrol assigned areas and provide security to prevent crime, enforce laws, and protect life and property; operate patrol vehicles; back-up coworkers; provide scene security for Fire and Medical personnel.
• Enforce local, state, and federal laws and regulations; may act as Field Training Officer for other Deputies.
• Respond to emergency and non-emergency calls; interrogate victims, witnesses and suspects; collect and identify evidence; perform surveillance; complete reports and required paperwork; conduct follow-up investigations.
• Arrest violators; transport and process prisoners; testify in court; serve warrants and protection orders; perform building searches; conduct traffic stops and investigate accidents.
• Represent the Sheriff's Office at court hearings; prepare reports and subpoenaed materials; testify in court cases.
• Identify, attend and conduct training programs and seminars; participate in court security and act as bailiff as assigned.
• Assist in executing writs, subpoenas, court orders, evictions.
• Participate in preventative education and community outreach; educate and counsel the community on law enforcement activities and resources.
• Maintain patrol vehicles and equipment in good working order.
• Collaborate with Sheriff's personnel, County departments, outside organizations, and federal, state and local agencies.
• Serve as Field Training Officer (FTO) and assume duties of Sergeant when assigned.

What We're Looking For

• Knowledge of law enforcement principles, practices, methods, techniques and equipment.
• Knowledge of relevant laws, rules and regulations pertaining to law enforcement.
• Knowledge of county roads and routes.
• Knowledge of law enforcement investigative work.
• Skill in the use of firearms, evasive driving, and law enforcement communications equipment.
• Skill in acting quickly and calmly with sound judgment in emergencies.
• Skill in maintaining accurate and timely documentation and records.
• Skill in effectively communicating verbally and in writing.
• Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with colleagues, other agencies and the public.
• Education and experience: High School diploma or GED; AND one year as a Deputy Sheriff I or two years law enforcement experience with another agency; AND meet all Arizona POST requirements; AND a valid driver's license.
