- Stetson University seeks an outstanding musician and educator for a full-time, nine-month tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor of Music in Viola, starting in August 2027.
Qualifications
- The successful candidate will bring a proven record of performance excellence and effective teaching experience to Stetson’s undergraduate-only viola studio. Broad knowledge of solo, chamber, and orchestral repertoire and demonstrated potential for effective recruiting are essential. A terminal degree (DMA or PhD) in music is preferred, though candidates with a master’s degree and significant professional achievement, ABD doctoral candidates, and individuals with equivalent international credentials will be considered. We are especially interested in applicants whose candidacy demonstrates a strong alignment with the recently reaffirmed University Values. Responsibilities
- Essential duties include teaching applied viola, leading weekly studio classes, coaching chamber ensembles, contributing to instruction within the string area, including courses in string pedagogy for performance majors and string instrumental techniques for Music Education majors, mentoring undergraduate music students inside and outside of the studio, and actively recruiting a diverse body of talented string players. The successful candidate will also contribute to the School of Music curriculum in a secondary area of teaching appropriate to their expertise and the needs of the School. These assignments may include upper-division courses such as symphonic and chamber music literature, core music history, and other music offerings within the curriculum that are aligned with the candidate’s background and experience. The candidate will have the opportunity to contribute a student-centered immersive experience as part of the University’s experiential, contemporary, and integrative learning initiative – Hatter Ready. The position may also involve teaching general education music courses designed for non-music majors.
The School of Music:
- Stetson’s School of Music is an undergraduate-only program known for its excellence, depth, and long-standing reputation for the quality of its education. The school offers BM, BME, and BA degrees, with majors in performance, music education, music theory, composition, and outside-field areas. A faculty of 42 serves approximately 241 music majors and minors. The school has its own dean and holds full membership in the National Association of Schools of Music. Recent graduates of the School of Music are found on the stages of the world’s great opera houses; hold leadership positions in major symphony orchestras; serve as faculty members of the most prestigious colleges and universities throughout the nation; and matriculate in distinguished graduate programs in the United States and Europe. - Founded in 1883, Stetson University is a private, selective university comprised of a rich array of liberal arts and professional academic programs. Collectively, Stetson’s faculty works with approximately 3,700 students in undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs. The University’s historic main campus, located in DeLand, enrolls approximately 2,300 students in undergraduate programs in the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Business Administration, and the School of Music.
