Youth Apprentice

Wisconsin’s Youth Apprenticeship program is part of a statewide School-to-Work initiative. It is designed for high school students who want hands on learning in an occupational area at a worksite along with classroom instruction.

Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities

The duties listed are not set forth for the purposes of limiting the assignment of work. They are not to be construed as a complete list of the many duties normally to be performed under a position title or those to be performed temporarily outside an employee’s line of work.

Manufacturing Fundamentals

Machining Unit

• Read machining technical drawings and work orders.
• Interpret machining symbols and procedures.
• Identify set up.

• Monitor machining product and process specifications.
• Process production documents.
• Shutdown machining process.

Welding Unit

• Read welding technical drawings and work orders.
• Interpret welding symbols and procedures.
• Layout and plan work.
• Perform safety checks.
• Prepare base metal.
• Set up to fabricate base mental.
• Fabricate base metal.
• Thermally/chemically cut metal.
• Tack work pieces.
• Weld metal.
• Monitor product and process.
• Assist to inspect, measure, and/or test completed metal pieces.
• Process production documents.
• Clean up.
• Monitor equipment for correct operation.
• Perform routine preventive maintenance (PM).
• Document equipment use, PM, and/or operational problems.

Physical Demands

• Ability to stand for extended periods.
• Must be able to routinely lift 50lbs in a safe manner, and occasionally up to 75lbs.
• Ability to operate hand and power tools, repetitively, or continuously on a daily basis.
• Ability to safely use step ladders up to 8ft.
• Ability to work in various positions including sitting, kneeling, standing and working overhead for extended times.

Working Conditions

• Excessive noise and dust of a typical machine shop atmosphere.
• Non-air conditioned environment.
• Equipment moving hazard of fork lifts, transportation vehicles, and moving product.
• Possible change in work schedule on short notice.
• Moving machine parts hazards, as well as exposure to hot metal and sharp machined chips.
• Some exposure to coolant mist

Machines, Tools and Equipment

Company supplied and required safety equipment:

• Safety Glasses
• Uniforms/Aprons
• Cut-Proof Gloves
• Hearing Protection where required
• Dust Mask
• Other tools and equipment that may be required as dictated by work schedule.

Quality at the Source

• It is the responsibility of each individual working in manufacturing to confirm the grade and type of material are correct per engineering documentation and that the raw material is dimensionally correct and free from damage prior to beginning work at their station. If discrepancies are identified it is again the responsibility of every individual to bring those discrepancies to the attention of their supervisor or QA personnel at the time that the issue is identified.
• Each operator is responsible to confirm dimensional accuracy of every work-piece prior to delivering that material to the next sequential operation. This includes the use of calipers, micrometers, bore micrometers, and any other specialized tools required to confirm that the work-piece meets the intent of the engineering documentation. If discrepancies are identified it is again the responsibility of every individual to bring those discrepancies to the attention of their supervisor or QA personnel at the time that the issue is identified and work with those individuals to clarify ambiguity or identify root cause of the discrepancy. It is the responsibility of every individual to check the routing prior to delivering material to their internal customer. That material is expected to be clean, free of chips, excess coolant, and sharp edges.
• It is the responsibility of each individual working in manufacturing to leave their work area clean and organized for use by the next individual or shift. If a reasonable standard is not met it is again the responsibility of every individual to bring those discrepancies to the attention of their supervisor.
