About this role

Yard Master

Your future role

As our Yard Master, you will play a critical role in keeping Queensland's rail network moving by overseeing the safe and efficient movement, allocation, and positioning of the NGR rollingstock fleet. You'll coordinate planned, corrective, and project-related fleet movements, ensuring all activities are completed to the highest standards of safety, quality, and operational excellence. Your work will directly contribute to fleet availability and the successful delivery of operational commitments, while ensuring every decision and action aligns with Alstom's EHS movement framework. We’ll look to you for:

  • Leading and promoting a strong safety-first culture, ensuring compliance with all HSE, rail safety, quality, and environmental requirements.
  • Coordinating and supervising the safe and efficient movement, allocation, and positioning of the QNGR fleet across the depot.
  • Conducting risk assessments, safety audits, inspections, and investigations, while implementing controls to minimise operational risks.
  • Coaching, mentoring, and supporting team members, fostering accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Overseeing shift operations, including pre-start briefings, field verifications, and effective shift handovers.
  • Liaising with Fleet Control, Production Management, contractors, and key stakeholders to ensure seamless depot and fleet operations.
  • Supporting fleet availability by coordinating train movements for maintenance, testing, service delivery, and project activities.
  • Monitoring depot infrastructure, equipment, and operational standards to maintain a safe, efficient, and high-performing work environment.
  • Driving productivity and operational excellence by identifying and implementing process and movement improvements.
  • Ensuring team members maintain the required competencies, training, and qualifications to safely perform rail movement activities.

All about you

We value passion and attitude over experience. That’s why we don’t expect you to have every single skill. Instead, we’ve listed some that we think will help you succeed and grow in this role:

  • Proven experience in train shunting and driving operations within a rolling stock or fleet maintenance environment.
  • Strong knowledge of rail safety, risk management, and operational compliance in a depot or yard setting.
  • Experience using maintenance management systems, particularly SAP and SES.
  • Well-developed leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritise tasks, solve problems, and make sound operational decisions in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Teams, and Excel.
  • Commitment to upholding organisational values, professional standards, and the company's Code of Conduct.

Ready to take the lead in shaping the reliability and performance of one of Queensland’s most important rail fleets? Apply today and be part of a team driving safety, innovation, and operational excellence from our Wulkuraka facility.
