About the Role Abbott's HRTS group is seeking a Workday Architect to lead the design, governance, and continuous improvement of Workday Payroll for US Payroll. This role owns end-to-end payroll architecture, ensuring scalable configuration, robust integrations, audit-ready compliance, and a frictionless employee experience across pay cycles. You will be the technical thought leader driving payroll modernization, operational reliability, and strategic roadmap delivery.
What You'll Do
- Lead HRTS Projects, providing expertise to associate architects and ensuring on-time delivery with appropriate documentation.
- Own the Workday Payroll architecture across configuration, integrations, reporting, security, and data governance.
- Design scalable solutions for gross-to-net processing, taxation, garnishments, pretax/post-tax deductions, retro and off-cycle payrolls, bonus/commission, and year-end activities.
- Collaborate with Senior Architects to identify innovative opportunities to enhance our customers’ experience.
- Serve as a primary resource for associate architects and other functional leads for proof of concept reviews and exploring new data delivery methods.
- Ensure cross-HRTS alignment on priority initiatives.
- Define project scope, manage timelines, gather requirements, and make recommendations to meet client needs within our systems.
- Document processes and route approvals for signature.
- May oversee Associate Architects and contract workers; ensure the team works within project guidelines.
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s Degree preferred. Degrees in Computer Science, Information Technology Management, Business Administration or related field.
- 7-10 years of technology experience; 4+ years Workday experience.
- HR Information System background and cloud-based HR systems background preferred.
- Experience with Workday US Payroll required; Time tracking and Absence modules preferred.
- Workday certification/training for US Payroll is a plus.
- Deep knowledge of U.S. payroll tax, multi-state compliance, garnishments, benefit taxation, and year-end processing.
- Experience with payroll accounting and reconciliation with Finance/GL.
- Excellent communication skills.

- Base pay: $99,300.00 – $198,700.00 per year.
