Job title: VP, Head of Casualty Belgium & Netherlands

About the Role Sompo International seeks a VP, Head of Casualty Belgium & Netherlands to own the casualty market strategy for Belgium and the Netherlands, drive profitable growth, and manage client and broker relationships. The role sits at the intersection of underwriting leadership, business development and external representation, delivering results aligned with local, regional and global objectives. Based out of Brussels or Rotterdam.

What You'll Do

  • Own full P&L accountability and lead market strategy for Casualty in the Netherlands and Belgium
  • Actively source submissions to grow portfolio profitability
  • Meet and negotiate with clients and brokers to build relationships and win new business
  • Build and manage a well-diversified book in terms of risk profile and segmentation
  • Participate in development of underwriting strategies at European level
  • Participate in local management team
  • Analyze underwriting information, create offers, ensure terms and conditions
  • Conduct contract negotiations, travel to client meetings, and present to customers and brokers
  • Develop, launch, and maintain local language Casualty product versions; monitor market/product developments
  • Ensure underwriting document filings, data entry accuracy, and contract integrity
  • Interact and negotiate with external and internal partners
  • Support marketing efforts with high-quality solutions to raise Sompo's profile
  • Lead value-add projects and activities as required
  • Represent Sompo externally at the highest levels, including press, industry forums, etc.

What We're Looking For

  • 10+ years underwriting and (senior) management in Casualty in Netherlands and Belgium; wider experience a plus
  • Deep insurance industry knowledge with relevant qualifications and track record
  • Strong expertise in international large casualty and heavy industry underwriting of global programs
  • Broad network within Dutch and Belgium brokers and in-house risk managers
  • Strong leadership, capable of leading from the front, empowering others
  • Business-building mindset with track record of profitable growth
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, leadership, integrity
  • Deep knowledge of international management processes and corporate dynamics; market environment
  • Understanding of economic relationships, insurance business models and strategy development
  • Ability to assess strategic issues and deliver tactical solutions; developing annual and long-term plans
  • Understanding of regulatory environment and its impact on development, underwriting, and claims
  • Demonstrated leadership in performance management and team building; problem solving
  • Strong relationship-building and emotional intelligence; clear persuasive communication
  • Language: English; any other European language a plus
  • Willingness to travel internationally as required
