About the Role
Syracuse University’s Institute for Democracy, Journalism & Citizenship (IDJC) invites experienced leaders in media, government, nonprofits and business to join as Visiting Fellows for a semester-long non-academic affiliation based in Washington, DC, with connections to Syracuse University. The program provides funding, prestigious affiliation, and access to office space in Dupont Circle and a studio to develop thought leadership and convene events, bridging academia, policy-making, and real-world impact.
What You'll Do
- Submit a proposal focused on a major project or public-facing initiative to undertake while at the Institute.
- RESEARCH – collaborate on developing applications for the Institute’s research and build synergies between researchers and partners in media, government, and public institutions by leveraging professional networks.
- CREATIVE ACTIVITY – pursue in-depth, substantial creative work and develop new policy applications for the media industry and/or governmental and public institutions to promote trust in governance and democracy.
- STUDENT ENGAGEMENT – guest lecture in classes, help develop and enrich curriculum, advise on Syracuse University’s academic programs, and contribute to professional development content for practitioners in democracy, journalism and citizenship.
- PUBLIC DIALOG – engage in events to promote civil dialog, modeling diversity of thought, freedom of speech, and nonpartisan conversations on important topics.
- EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING – enhance student learning outside the classroom, provide career guidance, help identify internships, and share experience in various organizations.
What We're Looking For
- Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
- Seven (7) plus years of experience in a media, government, non-profit, public policy, think tank, or related field focused on media, governance and civic engagement.
- Skills and Knowledge: recognized excellence in one’s professional field; reputation for high ethical standards; demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in non-partisan dialog; passion for working with students and/or colleagues in a collaborative environment; broad professional experience that can contribute to expanding IDJC’s mission.
Compensation & Benefits
- Pay Range: $25,000 - $30,000 per 3-4 month appointment.
- This is a semester-long, on-campus role with office space in Dupont Circle, access to IDJC’s audio/video studio, and opportunities to develop thought leadership and network with government agencies, academic institutes, advocacy organizations, and other stakeholders.
- Remote work arrangements are limited in accordance with University policy.
