Xavier University of Louisiana Visiting Assistant Professor Positions
The Department of English at Xavier University of Louisiana invites applications for three Visiting Assistant Professor positions. These are full-time appointments with primary teaching responsibilities in the English Department’s Freshman Composition sequence. The positions are renewable annually for up to three years, contingent upon satisfactory performance and institutional need. The ideal candidate will hold a Ph.D. in English, Rhetoric and Composition, or a closely related field, or an M.F.A. in Creative Writing or a related discipline, and will have demonstrated experience teaching at the college or university level. Candidates must have earned the terminal degree by August 1, 2027.
The Department of English seeks an engaging and student-centered educator who is committed to excellence in teaching, mentorship, and service. As a Visiting Assistant Professor, the successful candidate will play an important role in delivering the department’s Freshman Composition sequence and supporting Xavier University of Louisiana’s mission of preparing students to become effective communicators, critical thinkers, and leaders. This position offers an opportunity for an emerging scholar to contribute meaningfully to a vibrant academic community while gaining valuable teaching and service experience at the nation’s only Catholic HBCU. Ideal candidates will demonstrate a strong commitment to undergraduate education, evidence of effective and inclusive teaching practices, and the ability to engage students from diverse backgrounds in a supportive learning environment. The department welcomes applicants whose scholarly or creative interests include English, Rhetoric and Composition, African American and African Diaspora Literature, Women’s and Gender Studies, Creative Writing, or related fields. The department is particularly interested in candidates who are dedicated to fostering student success, advancing educational equity, and contributing to the academic and personal development of Xavier University’s diverse student population through their teaching, service, and commitment to educational excellence.
Duties

Teach a 4-4 course load consisting primarily of ENGL 1000, ENGL 1010, ENGL 1020, and other English courses as assigned through in-person instruction.

Support student success through effective teaching, mentoring, and academic engagement.

Contribute to curriculum, assessment, and continuous improvement of the Freshman Composition program.

Participate in departmental meetings, initiatives, and service activities supporting the mission of the Department of English and Xavier University of Louisiana.

The Department of English offers bachelor’s degrees in English and English Education, as well as minors in English, Creative Writing, Professional Writing, and Digital Humanities. English also houses an annual, undergraduate journal of creative writing, New Voices, and Xavier Review Press, which publishes two books per year on the arts and humanities, as well as Xavier Review, one of the longest-running literary journals in the region: www.xavierreview.com. XRP has special interests in the American South, New Orleans, the Gulf and Caribbean sphere, and African American culture, ethnography, and religion.
