Job Description Summary

The Department of Religious Studies at Nazareth University in Rochester, NY, invites applications for a two-year Visiting Assistant Professor position in Religion and Biomedical Ethics, beginning Fall 2027.

The successful candidate will teach multiple sections of our introductory world religions course and upper-division biomedical ethics course through a religious studies lens. Candidates will also have the opportunity to teach upper-division courses in related areas such as sexual ethics, environmental ethics, human-animal ethics, and Artificial Intelligence ethics.

In all cases, a comparative approach is required for this position. The successful candidate must examine ethical questions and foundational concepts across multiple religious traditions. This comparative framework must be integrated into both the introductory world religions and the upper-division biomedical ethics course. We seek candidates to contribute to interdisciplinary program development in order to strengthen cross-campus collaboration.

Candidates must demonstrate a clear commitment to teaching excellence that bridges the liberal arts and professional programs, successfully engaging religious studies majors/minors, general education students, and interprofessional health science students. These courses would serve as requirements or electives for interdisciplinary majors/minors such as Bioethics, Spiritual Care, Interfaith/DEI, Global Sustainability, Women and Gender Studies, and Ethical AI.

The teaching load is four courses per semester, generally with two or three preparations.

Essential Functions

Teaching

Contributions to the Department: meetings, research, office hours, faculty development workshops

Contributions to the University: new faculty orientation, mentor/mentee relationship, faculty/division/Assembly Day meetings, Commencement

Contributions to the Community: in line with specialization and interests

Required Education, Experience, Technology and Skills

PhD in Religious Studies with a specialization in biomedical ethics, or with a PhD completed by time of appointment (August 2027).

Teaching experience in biomedical ethics from a Religious Studies perspective, or specific training to do so

Teaching experience in World Religions, or specific training to teach introductory course in world religions

Ability to teach upper-division thematic courses examining ethical questions across multiple religious traditions.

Ability to use computers, software, and related technologies effectively.

Preferred Education, Experience, Technology Applications and Skills

PhD. in Religious Studies or related field with a specialization in religion and biomedical ethics

Demonstrated undergraduate teaching excellence

Interest in interdisciplinary program development

Ability to use computers, software, and related technologies effectively
