About the Role GIFFORDS is seeking a Vice President of Federal and Political Affairs to lead the organization's federal legislative initiatives, strategy, coalitions, and execution of PAC, political, and electoral programs. The VP will serve as a senior spokesperson (especially in Washington, DC) and as a key liaison to federal lawmakers, advocacy groups, and candidates, and will be a member of the Executive Management Team shaping organization-wide strategic planning and performance. What You'll Do
- Design, lead, and execute federal affairs and political strategies aimed at passing critical gun safety legislation, building sensible regulation, and electing aligned candidates, in coordination with staff and outside consultants.
- Steward and build high-level relationships with government officials, elected leaders, candidates, partners, and others to communicate the organization's mission and educate this audience on gun safety.
- Lead maintenance of strategic relationships with peer movements and organizations outside the gun safety space as part of a comprehensive legislative and political strategy.
- Develop and prioritize the organization's federal gun violence prevention legislative agenda (offensive and defensive) in collaboration with policy, research, community violence, and litigation teams and external stakeholders.
- Coordinate with the VP of State Affairs to ensure federal and state strategies are aligned and messaging is consistent.
- Oversee a team of roughly seven federal and political staff plus outside consultants executing the organization's legislative and political strategies.
- Elevate gun safety as a key policy priority and voting issue.
- Oversee creation and analysis of information and production of materials (talking points, fact sheets, testimony, letters, reports, etc.) to support government affairs and political agendas.
- Serve as a senior spokesperson and representative for the organization, especially in Washington, DC.
- Apply an inclusion, diversity, equity, and anti-racism lens to all government and political affairs work, including supporting the IDEA team. What We're Looking For
- At least fifteen years of experience with federal legislative lobbying or political campaigns, with emphasis on advocacy.
- Comfortable with policy development and analysis.
- At least seven years of effectively managing a team and a variety of outside consultants; able to motivate and inspire teams in the face of challenges.
- Demonstrated success building a culture of inclusion, impact, and tenacity, valuing diverse voices and perspectives, along with bipartisanship, pragmatism, and the power of unlikely alliances.
- Ability to grow GIFFORDS’ brand, network, and relationships, with a track record of influencing leaders in government, politics, advocacy, etc.
- Strong analytical skills to drive decision-making and implement major projects.
- Exceptional people and project management skills with a track record of building, managing, and mentoring teams that produce high-quality results.
