About this role

About the Role The Vice President, Accounting will oversee the management, planning, and coordination of the accounting function, including accounting operations, month/quarter/year-end close activities, and regulatory reporting. The role will assist in year-end financial statements and footnotes and will act as the primary liaison with external financial statement auditors. This role supervises the Accounting Manager and the Accounting Operations Manager and reports to the Interim CFO. It involves collaboration on projects, analysis, process improvements, and the development and implementation of accounting policies, procedures and controls. What You'll Do

  • Oversee accounting functions ensuring the accuracy and integrity of regulatory and financial reporting in accordance with GAAP and regulatory requirements.
  • Establish and enforce proper accounting methods, policies and principles.
  • Manage direct reports and coordinate all operations of the accounting department; review and advise on financial/accounting processes.
  • Lead, direct and motivate the accounting team to achieve department objectives; set annual goals and complete evaluations for all direct reports; participate in merit discussions.
  • Participate in the development and execution of the annual Department Plan aligned with the credit union's Strategic Plan.
  • Identify and implement process improvements in accounting procedures, systems, relationships, and business practices.
  • Oversee month-end, quarter-end and year-end close activities, report preparation/validation, and variance analysis.
  • Oversee the GL chart of accounts and internal controls over the GL, including reconciliation processes, software applications, and segregation of duties.
  • Work closely with the CFO and VP of Finance to ensure material accounting estimates are accurate and well supported.
  • Serve on the Allowance for Credit Losses Committee.
  • Assist with the annual budgeting process, including forecasting non-interest income/expense and supporting budget owners with variance research.
  • Support activities for external audits and regulatory exams by coordinating documentation and reports to ensure compliance.
  • Serve as the department’s primary contact for Enterprise Strategic Projects (e.g., mergers & acquisitions, system conversions).
  • Prioritize and coordinate departmental reporting needs, driving improvements aligned with department and organizational goals.
  • Other responsibilities include coordinating NCUA Call Reports, Form 990 assistance (including UBIT analysis), managing AP-related tasks, tax filings and annual financial statement footnotes.
  • Oversee the Accounts Payable process related to contract review to ensure GAAP adherence and proper invoicing and approvals; oversee AP GL/RC coding aligned with the budget.
  • Foster strong working relationships with Finance peers and management; contribute to strategic initiatives.
  • Oversee preparation of personal property tax returns and ensure timely payment.
  • Support the Credit Union’s mission and strategic direction set by senior management and the board. What We're Looking For
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required; CPA or MBA with GAAP knowledge highly preferred; knowledge of financial institution regulatory reporting preferred.
  • Minimum 10 years of accounting experience with at least 7 years in a management/leadership role; prior financial institution experience preferred.
  • Experience in financial reporting, accounting operations, profitability reporting, and budgeting.
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel; strong analytical and problem-solving abilities; excellent leadership capabilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to convey complex information with tact and empathy at all levels.
  • Willingness to work full-time with additional hours as needed. Nice to Have
  • CPA or MBA with GAAP knowledge; financial institution experience preferred.
  • Advanced Excel and MS Office proficiency (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook).
