About the Role

The Veterinary Technician positions with the College of Veterinary Medicine Veterinary Teaching Hospital provide skilled veterinary technical support, assist clinicians and fourth-year students in patient care, maintain daily patient records and work-up documentation, and reflect charges in the electronic medical records system. Roles may include ordering and maintaining pharmaceuticals and consumable inventories and teaching/leading students in the professional degree program. Current vacancies span several services including Emergent Surgery, Oncology, Small Animal ICU & Emergency, and Radiology, with continued opportunities across the hospital.

What You'll Do

• Provide skilled veterinary technical support and assist clinicians and fourth-year students in all aspects of patient care, including maintaining daily records, recording procedures and medications, and reflecting charges in the EMR.
• Administer anesthetic injections and medications, draw blood, monitor vital signs, assist with surgery, and coordinate with other services to ensure efficient patient care.
• In Oncology: support management and treatment of oncology patients, assist during examinations, perform or assist in diagnostic procedures, administer anesthetics and medications, phlebotomy, monitor vital signs, and help prepare animals for surgery, radiology, or other treatments; communicate protocols to students and participate in oncology research as appropriate.
• Operate and troubleshoot specialty equipment; enter information into the patient EMR for charges, anesthetic events, communications, and miscellaneous information; coordinate procedures within other VTH units; provide nursing care and patient advocacy.
• In Small Animal ICU & Emergency Service: work in a 24/7 environment providing critical care support, including IV line placement, urinary catheterization, pain assessment, administering CRIs, monitoring vitals and blood pressure, ECG monitoring, and CPR; assist with thoracocentesis, abdominocentesis, transfusions, and student education.
• In Radiology: assist with CT and MRI examinations, administer contrast media, ensure safety protocols, perform routine QA and maintenance, train residents in RIS/PACS, and manage inventory.
• Facilitate patient care across multiple services and contribute to a collaborative teaching environment for fourth-year students.
• Enter and maintain accurate documentation in the EMR related to charges, anesthetic events, and communications.
• Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment and support general nursing care for veterinary patients.
• The Float/Pool Technician role offers a broad range of experience across services within the VTH.

What We're Looking For

• Veterinary technician qualification or equivalent experience with the ability to support clinicians and students in a fast-paced hospital setting.
• Proficiency with electronic medical records systems and ability to accurately reflect patient charges and medical records.
• Ability to administer anesthesia and medications, perform phlebotomy, monitor vital signs, place IV/central lines, catheterize, and assist in radiology, chemotherapy, and other specialized procedures as required by the service.
• Strong communication and teaching skills with the ability to explain procedures and protocols to students and staff.
• Capacity to coordinate procedures across multiple units and to participate in clinical rounds and education of fourth-year students.
• Willingness to work in a 24/7 ICU/ER environment for relevant service lines.

Nice to Have

• Strong communication and teaching aptitude.
• Experience with oncology nursing, chemotherapy administration, radiation therapy, ultrasound, CT, radiology, or RIS/PACS systems.
