Job Description

The Department of Pediatrics at the Medical University of South Carolina is seeking a skilled physician, trained in both palliative medicine and oncology, to establish a strong academic connection between the Palliative Care program and Pediatric Hematology/Oncology services. This role would embed specialty palliative care expertise within cancer services.

The physician will practice primarily in an ambulatory setting, delivering specialty palliative care to a subset of patients receiving care in the cancer center. There will also be an opportunity to complete inpatient consultations in close collaboration with the larger palliative care program.

In addition to direct clinical care, the position will work with palliative care and oncology leadership to develop referral pathways and clinic workflows, track metrics and impact, support the educational efforts of the clinical services, and participate in planning for future growth. There would also be an opportunity to pursue research and quality improvement initiatives.

This position offers an exciting opportunity to strengthen the level of support that children with cancer and their families receive. The role would work closely with, and be supported by, a robust interdisciplinary team within the larger palliative care and oncology programs to include social work, pastoral care, pharmacy, nursing, and grief support. In addition, there is an excellent home hospice organization that delivers concurrent care hospice in every part of the state through a pediatric dedicated team.

The role is focused on Associate and Assistant Professor level candidates.

Candidates must be board-certified/eligible in both oncology and palliative medicine.

The ideal candidate possesses strong clinical, communication, and family-centered care skills to meet the needs of the palliative care patients.
