About this role

About the Role Canonical seeks an Ubuntu Security Engineer to defend and enhance the security of Ubuntu across cloud, data science, AI, engineering, and IoT deployments. The role is home-based with worldwide reach, offering the opportunity to work with global teams to bake security into development and operations.

What You'll Do

  • Build and implement security controls for Ubuntu across on-premises and cloud deployments, ensuring robust defense in depth.
  • Perform threat modeling, vulnerability assessments, incident response, and security automation to reduce risk.
  • Develop tooling for security monitoring, detection, and remediation, and integrate security into CI/CD pipelines.
  • Collaborate with Ubuntu engineering, cloud, and product teams to embed security into design, code, and release cycles.
  • Participate in security reviews, governance, and risk assessments to support secure product strategy.

What We're Looking For

  • Deep experience with Linux security, system hardening, kernel security, and secure software development practices.
  • Strong incident response, vulnerability management, and threat-hunting skills.
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms, containers, virtualization, and secure design for distributed systems.
  • Proficiency in scripting and automation (Python, Bash, or similar).
  • Excellent communication and collaboration abilities across global teams.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with AppArmor, SELinux, kernel hardening, and security tooling.
  • Contributions to security open-source projects or security community involvement.
  • Security certifications are a plus.
