About this role
Canonical is a leading provider of open-source software and operating systems for global enterprise and technology markets. Its flagship platform, Ubuntu, is widely used across public cloud, data science, artificial intelligence, engineering, IoT, and other major technology initiatives. The company operates as a globally distributed organization with more than 1,200 employees across over 75 countries, with very few office-based roles.
Canonical is seeking experienced engineering leaders to work across its Ubuntu Engineering organization. The company is looking for technical leaders who are passionate about software quality, performance, reliability, and resilience, and who have a proven track record of building, nurturing, and developing high-performing engineering teams.
This leadership opportunity covers both engineering management and Senior+ individual contributor leadership tracks. At Canonical, engineering managers are expected to remain technically engaged and close to the code, while Senior+ engineers are expected to lead major software projects and contribute to the development of engineering processes and people.
The successful candidate will join one of the key engineering areas responsible for shipping Ubuntu, including Foundations, Server, Desktop, or Debcrafters. These teams work across foundational software, package managers, compilers, toolchains, bootloaders, filesystems, core utilities, Ubuntu Server, Ubuntu Desktop, software repositories, and distribution engineering.
As an engineering leader, you will be accountable for technical roadmaps and responsible for helping engineers grow, take ownership of meaningful work, and deliver high-quality results. You will provide technical direction, challenge and develop strong engineers, influence engineering culture, facilitate delivery, and collaborate with your team on strategy and execution.
The role also provides opportunities to contribute to the broader open-source community and work across a wide range of technologies within the Ubuntu ecosystem.
