About this role

Canonical is a leading provider of open-source software and operating systems for global enterprise and technology markets. Its flagship platform, Ubuntu, is widely used across public cloud, data science, artificial intelligence, engineering innovation, IoT, and other major technology initiatives. Canonical operates as a globally distributed company with more than 1,200 employees across over 75 countries.

The company is seeking a Ubuntu Core Software Engineer to help redefine the Linux experience in embedded environments through Ubuntu Core, a small, secure, and updateable operating system designed for the IoT market.

This role is suited to a software engineer with a strong passion for open-source software, Linux, security, and developer experience. The position involves challenging low-level engineering work across operating systems, Linux kernels, device firmware, boot mechanisms, and embedded systems.

The Ubuntu Core team develops secure and reliable solutions for industries including IoT, automotive, and aviation. The team works on device recovery mechanisms that allow manufacturers to simplify and standardize field operations across fleets of heterogeneous devices.

As part of the Ubuntu Core team, the successful candidate will design and implement software running across multiple CPU architectures, including ARM, RISC-V, and x86. The work will cover boot mechanisms, bootloaders, storage partition layouts, device trees, kernels, and system services.
