Role overview

The Treasurer is a voluntary member of the Diverse Voices management committee (executive member) and plays a key governance role in supporting the organisation’s financial sustainability, accountability and compliance. The Treasurer helps the management committee understand the organisation’s financial position, make informed decisions, protect funds and assets, and meet relevant reporting obligations as a Queensland-based not-for-profit and registered charity.

About the organisation

Diverse Voices is a Queensland-based not-for-profit LGBTIQA+ led organisation that supports the wellbeing, safety and inclusion of LGBTIQA+ Sistergirl and Brotherboy people and communities across the state. We provide community-led peer support, community engagement and connection activities and events, domestic, family and sexual violence support, suicide prevention activities, counselling, and education and training. Our work is grounded in dignity, respect, inclusion, lived experience, accessibility, intersectionality and self-determination.

Key responsibilities

  • In collaboration with the Executive Director, and Payroll & Finance Officer, provide clear, timely financial reports to the management committee, including income and expenditure, cash flow, balance sheet information, budget tracking and any significant financial risks.

  • Support the preparation, monitoring and review of the annual budget, including grant income, fundraising, donations, program costs and operational expenses.

  • Oversight to ensure the organisation keeps accurate financial records that properly record and explain transactions, financial position and performance.

  • Support appropriate financial controls, including delegation limits, approval processes, separation of duties, secure banking access and fraud-prevention practices.

  • Prepare or coordinate financial statements and reports for management committee meetings, the annual general meeting and relevant funders or regulators; in collaboration with the Executive Director and the Finance & Payroll Officer.

  • Support the organisation to meet Queensland incorporated association obligations, including annual financial statements, audit or verification requirements, annual returns and reporting to members, where applicable.

  • Support the organisation to meet Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission obligations, where applicable, including responsible financial management, record keeping and annual reporting.

  • Advise the management committee on financial implications of strategic decisions, funding opportunities, contracts, insurance, employment commitments and program delivery.

  • Ensure conflicts of interest are disclosed and managed appropriately in relation to financial decisions.

  • Help the management committee understand financial information and encourage shared responsibility for financial governance.

  • Governance and compliance expectations

  • As a management committee member, the Treasurer is expected to act with reasonable care and diligence, act honestly and in the best interests of the organisation and its purposes, manage conflicts of interest, avoid misuse of position or information, support responsible financial management and help ensure the organisation does not operate while insolvent.

  • Key Skills & Experience

  • Understanding of, or willingness to learn, not-for-profit financial governance in an Australian and Queensland context.

  • Ability to read, explain and question financial reports, including budgets, profit and loss reports, balance sheets and cash flow information.

  • Experience with bookkeeping, accounting, budgeting, grants acquittals, payroll, audit or financial oversight is highly desirable to allow for oversight of these activities for the organisation.

  • Commitment to the safety, dignity, inclusion and leadership of LGBTIQA+ Sistergirl and Brotherboy communities.

  • Commitment to anti-discrimination, cultural safety, accessibility and trauma-informed practice.

  • Ability to communicate financial information clearly to people with different levels of financial literacy.

  • Integrity, reliability, attention to detail and willingness to ask questions or seek professional advice when needed.

  • Ability to work respectfully with other management committee members, staff, volunteers, community members, funders and external advisers.

  • Time commitment

  • The role is voluntary. The expected time commitment is approximately 15-20 hours per month, including attendance at management committee meetings, preparation of financial reports, liaison with staff or volunteers and periodic support for budgeting, annual reporting, audit or verification processes and the annual general meeting.

  • Eligibility and requirements

  • Must be eligible to serve as a management committee member under the organisation’s constitution or rules and applicable law.

  • Must be willing to comply with the organisation’s code of conduct, conflict of interest policy, financial delegations and other relevant policies.

  • Must maintain confidentiality and handle personal, financial and organisational information appropriately.

  • Willingness to complete onboarding, identity checks (paid for by organisation), referee checks, working with children or other screening checks (paid for by organisation) depending on the organisation’s activities and policies.

  • Lived experience as part of the LGBTIQA+ Sistergirl and Brotherboy communities.

  • People with diverse identities, cultures, abilities, experiences and backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

  • People with relevant skills, transferable experience and/or connection to LGBTIQA+SB communities, who have not yet had the opportunity to gain management committee or board experience, are welcome and encouraged to apply.
