Job title: Transportation Substitute
About the Role The Transportation Substitute supports Hanover County Public Schools as Auto Driver, Transportation Attendant and/or Traffic Guard. The role ensures safe student transport to and from home, on field trips, and other activities requiring school transportation, while assisting students with special needs and monitoring safety.
What You'll Do
- Transport students safely to and from home, on field trips, and other school activities requiring transportation.
- Direct loading and unloading of students, secure car seats and safety restraints, ensure seat belts are fastened at all times.
- Operate hydraulic-lift equipment for loading/unloading wheelchair-confined students; provide basic first-aid and health care as necessary for special needs students when required.
- Direct traffic at drop-off/pick-up lanes and bus loops; keep areas clear and communicate with drivers and school staff via two-way radio.
- Maintain vehicle fuel levels, perform daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections, and report accidents or student injuries to authorities; complete required records.
- Assist with emergency evacuation planning and drills; participate in trainings as required; support safety procedures in line with board policies.
- Arrive promptly at scheduled times and care for vehicles assigned to the route.
What We're Looking For
- At least 3 years of driving experience and a valid Virginia driver's license.
- Ability to pass physical, drug testing, and all required traffic safety training; pass pre-employment and annual testing.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and assist students with loading/unloading and mobility devices.
- Knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations governing school transportation; ability to operate the vehicles and radio; basic math; read procedures; write routine documents; speak clearly; solve practical problems.
- Positive image, good judgment, reliability, and ability to work with students and staff in emergencies.
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary: $16-$23 per hour.
- Location: Ashland, VA or Hanover County, VA; onsite; part-time and temporary role.
