About the Role
The Transportation Manager leads branch transportation operations, ensuring safe and efficient execution while delivering the annual operating plan and managing P&L. This role coordinates with Operations, Commercial leadership, and District Transportation Manager to optimize private fleet and carrier performance.
What You'll Do
- Lead the branch transportation operation, including private fleet and common carrier modes, and develop the after-hours support and staffing plans
- Manage retention, recruiting, development of Transportation Supervisors and Dispatchers, and disciplinary actions; oversee payroll accuracy
- Oversee collective bargaining for unionized drivers (if applicable)
- Optimize the private fleet: cost efficiency, DOT HOS compliance, route planning to reduce CPM, and mode mix management
- Coach safe driving and ensure regulatory and DOT compliance
- Manage lane-level sourcing for Private, Common, and Dedicated fleets; interface with carriers on issues and improvements
- Implement on-time delivery strategies for company-owned fleets and carriers; ensure route guide compliance
- Ensure capacity to handle a 20% volume surge using private fleet, common carrier, or dedicated solutions; collaborate with DTMs regionally for capacity needs
- Lead the local Transportation team and drive asset utilization, fuel efficiency, DOT HOS optimization, and productivity initiatives
What We're Looking For
- Experience leading transportation operations with P&L responsibility
- Proven ability to manage private fleet and contractor/carrier relationships, including unionized sites (if applicable)
- Knowledge of DOT regulations and Hours of Service; strong people management and payroll oversight
- Strong collaboration with operations, commercial teams, and regional leadership; ability to manage capacity and route optimization
