General Statement of Duties
-
Forsyth County's General Services Department has an opening for Trades Specialist. The Trades Specialist position is an intermediate level technician position and is essential to the daily operations of the Facilities Operations Division. This position is part of a team that works to maintain the maintenance plumbing operations in the Law Enforcement Detention Center (LEDC). This position will work on all aspects of the Plumbing trade within the County.

As a Trade plumbing specialist in the LEDC, this position manages daily work orders that include servicing roughly 1,000 toilets and numerous commercial-grade fixtures throughout the building. The role requires diagnosing and resolving complex plumbing issues—such as severe blockages, system malfunctions, and the replacement of specialized correctional-grade components—while navigating challenges created by high-volume use and frequent vandalism. Much of the work is performed as a team and working directly with a Skilled Trade Plumber, you will collaborate regularly with other trades such as HVAC, Electrical, and Building Maintenance teams to address multi-trade problems and support broader facility operations.

All tools will be provided as well as a vehicle to use for County business.

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 A.M. - 5:00 P.M.

Position will require on call duties and some after-hours work.

A successful candidate should have the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

Ability to do a variety of skilled maintenance work.

Considerable knowledge of the materials, tools and methods used in a building trade such as carpentry, plumbing, painting, electrical troubleshooting or in grounds maintenance.

Working knowledge of one or more additional trades.

Ability to work from plans and specifications.

Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees.

Knowledgeable of plumbing vocabulary, the ability to read and interpret mechanical and structural blueprints, and plan plumbing repairs and modifications.

Ability to read blueprints and sketches related to construction projects in order to assist in the preparation of materials estimates.

Must have ability to perform simple to complex movements requiring moderate coordination.

Must have visual perception and ability to discriminate colors.

Must be able to perceive and discriminate odors/sounds.

Must be able to perform manual labor for extended periods of time as required by work assignments.

Minimum Education and Experience
-
Graduation from high school or GED and at least three years of experience in plumbing maintenance.

A valid N.C. driver's license is required.

Must have demonstrated ability to perform semi-skilled to skilled maintenance work in one or more trades or maintenance work including operation of various equipment and/or tools.

A higher education level may be considered as a substitution for all or part of the experience requirement.

This position is subject to working in high security areas governed by the US Department of Justice's Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Security Policy and therefore requires successfully passing a more stringent criminal background check

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

This position will complete routine work orders which includes repairing or replacing potable and non-potable water lines, plumbing fixtures, and clearing drain lines.

Maintain, and repair general plumbing components to include toilets, urinals, faucets, hose bibs, and drains.

Preventative maintenance of plumbing systems which includes: domestic water lines, wastewater lines, and drainage systems. Installs new plumbing fixtures, pressure valves and piping.

Participates in special projects and general maintenance and making repairs to building facilities.

Assists Skilled Trades Specialists in completing tasks and responsibilities.

Performs related work as required.
