Thesis Proposal

This MSc thesis is suitable for one or two students who are completing their studies in energy, mechatronics, mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, or a related field. Interest in electrification, battery technology, and manufacturing systems is beneficial.

Background

Battery packs are a critical component in electrified vehicles and machines, and their manufacturing has a major impact on product quality, cost, throughput, and sustainability. As battery demand increases, it becomes increasingly important to understand and improve the manufacturing process from cell preparation to module and pack assembly. Efficient battery pack manufacturing requires robust process control, optimized material flow, and careful consideration of quality, safety, and energy use.

Project Summary

The thesis aims to investigate and propose an improved understanding of battery pack design and manufacturing relationship at system level, with the goal of optimizing production efficiency, quality, and performance. Battery pack manufacturing can be viewed as a sequence of interconnected process steps, such as cell handling, module assembly, welding or bonding, thermal interface application, enclosure assembly, testing, and final pack integration. These steps are dependent on each other, and bottlenecks in one part of the process can affect the entire production flow. The manufacturing process can be studied using production data, process measurements, and simulation. Based on this knowledge, the sequence of operations, production balancing, and resource allocation can be analyzed and optimized to improve throughput, reduce scrap, and support scalable production. To this end, the main goals of this thesis will be:

  • To build a library of battery pack manufacturing process steps and representative production cases based on real or industrially relevant data.
  • To build a simulation model including process times, material flow, equipment constraints, quality checks, and energy use.
  • To develop an optimizing algorithm for production scheduling or process balancing at battery pack manufacturing level based on adjustable boundaries.

A full report of the work carried out will be prepared and presented to staff at Volvo Group.

It is desired that the student or students perform the thesis at Volvo Group facilities in Eskilstuna, Sweden.
