The Asia Foundation Development Fellows Program 2027 is inviting applications from outstanding young professionals and emerging leaders across Asia and the Pacific for its flagship leadership development programme. The initiative is designed for individuals under the age of 40 who have demonstrated professional achievement, leadership potential, and a commitment to creating meaningful change in their fields and communities.

Support Charities

The year-long programme offers selected fellows an opportunity to strengthen their leadership capabilities, deepen their understanding of critical development challenges across Asia and the Pacific, and connect with an international network of practitioners, policymakers, innovators, and mentors.

Organised by The Asia Foundation, the programme combines intensive leadership training, study tours, policy discussions, professional development support, coaching, and mentorship. The 2027 programme will include activities in Japan and the United States, providing participants with opportunities to learn from experienced leaders, engage with development practitioners, and exchange ideas with other emerging professionals.

A total of 10 emerging leaders will be selected for the 2027 cohort. Applications close on December 1, 2026.

Importantly, fellows do not need to leave their current employment or professional positions to participate. They can remain in their existing roles while taking part in the scheduled programme activities throughout the fellowship year.

About The Asia Foundation Development Fellows Program

The Asia Foundation Development Fellows Program is a flagship professional advancement and leadership development initiative established to support emerging leaders from Asia and the Pacific.

Support Charities

Drawing on The Asia Foundation’s seven decades of experience working across the region, the programme seeks to strengthen the leadership capacity of individuals who are contributing to development in their respective professional fields and communities.

The Foundation works across 20 countries and has developed programmes addressing a wide range of development challenges. Through the Development Fellows initiative, it brings together promising professionals whose work and leadership potential can contribute to the region’s future.

The programme recognises that addressing complex development challenges requires more than technical knowledge. It also requires thoughtful leadership, professional integrity, collaboration, the ability to inspire others, and an understanding of the social, political, economic, and institutional conditions shaping development.

For this reason, the fellowship combines leadership development with exposure to development practitioners, policymakers, innovators, and other influential professionals.

Since its establishment in 2014, the programme has built a network of 142 fellows from 25 countries. Its alumni include public servants, entrepreneurs, journalists, lawyers, researchers, and civil society leaders.

The fellowship therefore offers more than a series of training activities. It provides an opportunity to become part of a growing professional network connecting individuals working on important development issues across Asia and the Pacific.

Selection is highly competitive. The 2026 cohort, for example, was selected from more than 1,900 applicants. Candidates should therefore demonstrate not only their professional accomplishments but also their potential to contribute meaningfully to their fields and communities.

What the Asia Foundation Development Fellows Program 2027 Offers

Selected fellows will participate in a year-long professional advancement programme involving leadership training, study tours, conferences, seminars, professional development support, and mentorship.

The programme is structured around two major learning components in 2027, alongside an individual professional development award and mentoring opportunities.

  1. Spring 2027: Leadership Training Program and Study Tour in Japan

Dates: March 11–20, 2027

Location: Japan

The first major component of the programme will take place in Japan from March 11 to March 20, 2027.

During this period, fellows will participate in intensive leadership training and a study tour designed to strengthen their professional capabilities and expose them to different perspectives on development and leadership.

The programme will include several activities.

Intensive Leadership Training With Executive Coaches

Fellows will participate in leadership training modules facilitated with the involvement of executive coaches.

These sessions are intended to help participants reflect on their leadership approaches, identify areas for improvement, and strengthen their ability to lead effectively.

The training will provide opportunities to examine the personal and professional dimensions of leadership, including how individuals respond to challenges, work with others, and pursue meaningful change.

Site Visits With Development Practitioners and Local Innovators

The Japan programme will include site visits and engagement with development practitioners, recognised policy leaders, thinkers, and local innovators.

These interactions will expose fellows to practical experiences and perspectives on development and leadership.

Participants will have opportunities to learn from individuals and organisations working on issues relevant to their professional interests and development priorities.

Short Assignments and Practical Learning

The spring programme will also involve short assignments that encourage participants to engage actively with the learning experience.

These assignments are intended to complement the training sessions and provide opportunities for fellows to reflect on leadership concepts and their practical application.

Self-Care and Wellness for Leaders

An important feature of the 2027 programme is its focus on self-care and wellness for leaders.

Leadership often involves demanding responsibilities, difficult decisions, and sustained engagement with complex challenges. The programme therefore includes sessions that explore the importance of personal well-being in effective leadership.

These sessions will encourage participants to consider how they can maintain their well-being while carrying out demanding professional and community responsibilities.
