Job Description
Owl Autonomous Imaging is seeking a skilled Test Engineer to join our dynamic team in Fairport, NY. This hybrid role is crucial for supporting the development, integration, verification, and validation of our advanced AI-powered thermal imaging systems.
In this position, you will collaborate closely with hardware, firmware, software, systems, and product teams. Your primary responsibility will be to develop and execute comprehensive test systems and strategies, ensuring our products consistently meet rigorous technical, performance, reliability, and customer requirements.
We are looking for a hands-on engineer who thrives on working across the hardware and software boundary. You should enjoy troubleshooting complex systems, developing repeatable test methods, and transforming test results into actionable engineering improvements that drive product excellence.

Key Responsibilities
- Develop, document, and execute test systems, plans, procedures, and test cases for thermal imaging modules, cameras, sensors, embedded systems, and related products.
- Perform functional, integration, system-level, performance, regression, and environmental testing.
- Develop and maintain automated and semi-automated test methods where appropriate.
- Design and build test fixtures, test setups, and supporting tools to enable repeatable and efficient testing.
- Collect, analyze, and document test data and identify trends, anomalies, and product issues.
- Troubleshoot failures across hardware, firmware, software, optics, sensors, and system interfaces.
- Work with engineering teams to identify root causes and support corrective actions.
- Reproduce, document, and track defects through resolution.
- Participate in requirements reviews and provide input regarding testability, validation methods, and acceptance criteria.
- Establish appropriate test coverage for new features, engineering changes, and new product development activities.
- Support verification and validation activities throughout the product development lifecycle.
- Develop clear, objective test reports and communicate results to engineering and leadership.
- Support prototype builds, engineering evaluations, production, field testing, and customer demonstrations as needed.
- Maintain test equipment, fixtures, documentation, and laboratory organization.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of Owl’s engineering test processes, methodologies, and documentation.
- Follow applicable quality, configuration management, cybersecurity, and company procedures.
Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related technical discipline.

2+ years of experience in imaging test, verification, validation, systems engineering, product development, or a related field.

Experience developing and executing structured test systems, plans, and procedures.

Experience troubleshooting technical issues involving both hardware and software.

Ability to interpret engineering requirements, specifications, schematics, drawings, and technical documentation.

Experience with data collection, analysis, and technical reporting.

Strong problem-solving and root-cause analysis skills.

Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary engineering environment.

Strong written and verbal communication skills.

High attention to detail and a methodical approach to testing and documentation.

Experience with image testing systems, cameras, sensors, electronics, embedded systems, or autonomous/robotic systems (Preferred).

Experience with thermal imaging or infrared sensors (Preferred).

Experience with automated testing and scripting using Python or a similar programming language (Preferred).

Familiarity with test and measurement equipment such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, power supplies, electronic loads, and data acquisition systems (Preferred).

Experience developing or maintaining automated test fixtures (Preferred).

Experience with hardware/software integration testing (Preferred).

Familiarity with Git and software development workflows (Preferred).

Experience working within a formal product development, quality management, or verification/validation process (Preferred).

Experience with environmental, reliability, or qualification testing (Preferred).

Experience working with image or sensor data and associated analysis tools (Preferred).
