About this role
Location: We offer a Hybrid/Remote working policy.
About this role in the team:
We’re looking for a talented Tech Lead to lead the technical direction and delivery of the Billing & Fees subdomain within BVNK’s Ledger domain.
Billing & Fees sits at the heart of how BVNK monetises its products and services. The team is responsible for ensuring that every transaction is billed accurately, fees are applied correctly, and invoices can be generated, reconciled and audited with confidence.
Today, several of these processes rely on manual workflows and spreadsheets. As BVNK scales, we're building the automated infrastructure needed to support increasingly complex commercial agreements, growing transaction volumes, and enterprise-grade financial operations.
As Tech Lead, you'll be responsible for shaping the architecture and technical roadmap of our billing platform, turning complex financial and commercial requirements into reliable, scalable engineering solutions.
You'll lead the design and development of services supporting fee configuration, fee calculation, invoicing, billing automation and reconciliation, ensuring that the systems we build are accurate, resilient and maintainable.
This is a hands-on technical leadership role. You'll work closely with engineers, product managers, Finance, Commercial and other engineering domains to make critical architectural decisions, solve complex technical challenges, and guide the team towards high-quality delivery.
Key Areas of Responsibilities:
- Own the technical direction of Billing & Fees: Define and drive the architecture, technical strategy and engineering roadmap for billing services, ensuring solutions support BVNK's evolving commercial models, transaction volumes and operational requirements.
- Lead the development of scalable billing infrastructure: Architect and build services responsible for fee policy configuration, fee calculation, invoice generation, billing adjustments and reconciliation, replacing manual processes with automated, reliable workflows.
- Drive end-to-end billing automation: Design robust data pipelines and integrations connecting systems such as Snowflake, Salesforce, Ledger and internal financial services, ensuring accurate data flows from transaction processing through to invoicing and reporting.
- Ensure financial accuracy and auditability: Establish engineering patterns that support financial correctness, including idempotency, traceability, reconciliation, exception handling and comprehensive audit trails. Ensure billing discrepancies can be identified, investigated and resolved effectively.
- Lead architectural design and technical decisions: Drive technical design submissions, architecture reviews and service design, applying domain-driven design, hexagonal architecture and event-driven patterns to build well-defined, maintainable services.
- Provide hands-on technical leadership: Remain actively involved in designing, building and reviewing production code. Mentor engineers, provide technical guidance, unblock complex challenges and raise engineering standards across the squad.
- Collaborate across engineering and business domains: Partner with Product, Finance, Commercial, Back Office, Ledger, Digital Assets and Fiat teams to translate complex requirements into clear technical solutions and ensure reliable integration across systems.
- Own reliability and operational excellence: Establish strong standards for observability, monitoring, performance and incident response. Guide the team in managing production workloads, including message processing failures, dead-letter queues, service recovery and operational resilience.
- Drive engineering quality and delivery: Set expectations for testing, CI/CD, documentation and technical debt management. Work with the team to deliver high-quality solutions consistently while balancing speed, maintainability and long-term platform health.
What we need from you:
- 7+ years of backend software engineering experience, with strong hands-on expertise in Java/Kotlin and Spring Boot, including experience leading technical initiatives or providing technical leadership to other engineers.
- Proven experience designing and delivering complex, distributed, production-grade systems, with a strong understanding of microservices, event-driven architectures (Kafka, SQS), relational databases (MySQL/PostgreSQL) and caching technologies such as Redis.
- Experience working on financially sensitive systems, such as billing, invoicing, payments, ledger, fee calculation or reconciliation platforms, where accuracy, consistency, auditability and reliability are critical.
- Strong architectural expertise, including domain-driven design, hexagonal architecture, service decomposition, bounded contexts and asynchronous communication patterns.
- Demonstrated ability to own technical architecture and drive engineering decisions, balancing scalability, reliability, delivery timelines and business requirements.
- Strong API design experience, including building and evolving RESTful APIs, managing backwards compatibility, and creating reliable integration patterns across internal and external systems.
- Solid understanding of financial data integrity, including transactional consistency, idempotency, error recovery and reconciliation in distributed environments.
- Experience mentoring and guiding engineers through technical design, code reviews, problem-solving and complex delivery challenges.
- A strong production ownership mindset, with experience operating business-critical systems, participating in on-call rotations, managing incidents and using observability tooling such as Grafana, Prometheus and Micrometer.
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure-as-code, automated testing and modern software delivery practices.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to work effectively across Engineering, Product, Finance and Commercial teams in a distributed, remote-first environment.
- Comfortable being both a hands-on engineer and a technical leader, taking ownership of challenging problems while enabling others to deliver successfully.
What you can expect from us:
- Fair and competitive salary at every stage of your growth
- Flexible working hours, with hybrid working at its heart
- A culture built on passionate, growth-minded people
- A flexible approach to holiday
- Opportunities to travel to our offices around the world
- An open and creative environment where you can help us define the future of BVNK, its culture, and its opportunity sets
At BVNK, we are focused on building a diverse and inclusive team. While you may not meet all of our requirements, we’d encourage you to apply if you meet the majority of our expectations. You may be a great fit for this role or another role in our team.
