The Division of Teaching Labs (DTL) supports the delivery of laboratory courses and practicals by providing laboratory infrastructure, experimental needs, and technical expertise to departments within the Temerty Faculty of Medicine. DTL focuses on providing sustainable, effective, and responsive service to the departments, and ensuring a positive, productive, and safe learning and work environment. We advance youth STEM initiatives through collaborative and in-house outreach and educational programming.
As Teaching Labs Coordinator, you will play a key role in supporting teaching activities by coordinating laboratory operations, program administration, and health and safety compliance. You will assist with preparing and maintaining lab environments, supporting experimental work, and providing hands-on guidance to students and staff. You’ll also bring strong organizational skills and attention to detail to administrative tasks, process improvements, and communications, including supporting the development and maintenance of standard operating procedures and safety documentation, helping to ensure the labs operate safely, efficiently, and effectively.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Coordinating laboratory operations and experimental support, including preparing materials and equipment, assisting with experiments, modifying processes, reviewing procedures for feasibility and safety, and ensuring adherence to established procedures and standards
- Maintaining laboratory facilities, equipment, and inventory, including troubleshooting issues, restocking supplies, and ensuring proper cleaning, sterilization, and waste handling practices
- Supporting program administration and communications, including responding to enquiries, maintaining records and digital platforms, tracking student enrollment, and coordinating outreach and promotional activities
- Ensuring health, safety, and regulatory compliance, including delivering safety training, conducting inspections, monitoring adherence to standards, supporting biosafety documentation and permit requirements, and supporting risk assessments and mitigation planning
- Providing training, coordination, and guidance to staff and students, including recruiting and scheduling casual staff, delivering job-related training, and serving as a technical resource on lab procedures and equipment
Essential Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree or an acceptable combination of equivalent experience, preferably in biological science
- Minimum three (3) years of experience supporting teaching lab operations in a university environment
- Demonstrated experience setting up laboratory equipment and troubleshooting routine issues
- Demonstrated experience preparing routine samples for experiments
- Experience supporting experimental procedures and modifying lab processes, including reviewing processes for safety and feasibility in a teaching lab environment
- Experience providing administrative support and acting as a first point of contact
- Experience maintaining websites, databases, and digital platforms while supporting communications initiatives
- Experience coordinating staff, including recruitment, scheduling, and training
- Experience tracking and monitoring student registration or program participation
- Experience conducting lab inspections and delivering safety training
- Experience delivering training on experimental theory and protocols
- Experience developing, maintaining, or applying standard operating procedures and safety documentation
- Knowledge of health and safety regulations, laboratory standards, and compliance practices
- Proven ability to analyze workflows and implement process improvements
- Ability to orient students and staff to laboratory procedures and safe work practices
- Advanced proficiency with Office 365
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Highly organized with meticulous attention to detail
- Ability to prioritize tasks, manage competing deadlines, and work effectively in a fast-paced environment
- Demonstrated manual dexterity and precision in handling laboratory equipment
