About this role
Job title: Teacher Quality and Retention Program (TQRP) Fellowship
About the Role The Teacher Quality and Retention Program (TQRP) is a nationwide fellowship developed by the Thurgood Marshall College Fund to train and mentor aspiring, pre-service and new teachers from HBCUs and PBIs. Since its first Summer Institute in 2009, TQRP has grown into a robust, research-based program that supports future teacher leaders through year-round professional development and an intensive summer institute focused on culturally responsive teaching, trauma-informed approaches and social-emotional learning. TQRP emphasizes three focus areas—HBCU males, STEM, and developing strong pedagogy among new teachers—to prepare graduates for service in high-need urban and rural communities.
What You'll Do
- Participate in an intensive Summer Institute each year and ongoing year-round professional development.
- Engage in 1:1 coaching, mentorship, and leadership training as part of a close-knit educator community.
- Develop and deliver content, provide coaching and professional development to peers, and strengthen your pedagogy and research-based practice.
- Build a professional portfolio, resume, and interview skills to support career growth in high-need settings.

- U.S. Citizen or National/Permanent Resident Status.
- Current HBCU student or alumni.
- Education or STEM major.
- Ability to participate in an intensive Summer Institute each year and engage in interactive online support sessions throughout the year.
- Successful completion of a criminal background check.
- The TQRP application process is competitive and open to all interested candidates.
- Black Male Educators in their 1st–5th year of teaching are encouraged to apply for a one-year fellowship under the Black Male Expansion initiative, even if they didn’t attend an HBCU.
Nice to Have
- Black Male Educators expansion initiative participation.
Compensation & Benefits
- Fellows receive a modest stipend and have meals, hotel and travel expenses covered by TMCF for program events.
