Job title: Sustainability Engineer

About the Role Canonical is focused on sustainability as part of our mission. This role is to lead energy efficiency across Canonical products and operations, from the kernel to Ubuntu Desktop, devices and data centers, and to collaborate with strategic partners to reduce emissions and environmental impact.

What You'll Do

  • Define and drive the technical energy-efficiency roadmap across kernels, Ubuntu Desktop, devices, and data centers.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams and strategic partners to implement energy-saving improvements.
  • Measure and report energy usage and carbon footprint, and advocate for reduction initiatives.
  • Support travel policies and rail travel options to reduce emissions for in-person sprints.
  • Organize knowledge-sharing sessions on energy measurements, solar panels for home offices, and travel-footprint optimization.
  • Evaluate and contribute to carbon storage and carbon-offset projects as part of emissions strategy.

What We're Looking For

  • Interest in sustainability and climate impact; passion for reducing environmental footprint.
  • Engineering background with understanding of energy efficiency across software and hardware (kernel to user-space) and data centers.
  • Ability to collaborate across teams and with external strategic partners.
  • Analytical mindset with ability to measure energy usage and carbon metrics.
  • Strong communication and knowledge-sharing skills.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with energy measurement techniques for devices and with solar energy applications in home office contexts.
  • Interest or experience in travel carbon footprint reduction and rail-friendly travel policies.
  • Awareness of carbon storage or carbon capture projects.
