Supply Chain & Engineering – Downstream Energy Turnaround Modernization Manager

Accenture

About this role

Accenture

You will be part of Accenture's Supply Chain and Engineering practice, supporting Energy – Downstream (Refining) and Petrochemical clients. Accenture Supply Chain and Engineering helps clients leverage AI and digital technologies across product and asset lifecycles to build competitive advantage. Within Energy, our Downstream team helps refining and petrochemical operators build, operate and maintain their assets with greater safety and efficiency – bringing together predictive maintenance, intelligent asset management, connected worker solutions, digital twins and advanced analytics on the journey to the Intelligent Refinery.

Turnarounds are the largest planned capital and operating expense events in the life cycle of a refinery or petrochemical plant. With strong margins, refiners are running at maximum capacity and deferring turnarounds as long as they safely can – but every unit must eventually come down, and when it does, time is money. A single day over schedule can cost an operator millions of dollars in lost margin. Our clients need turnarounds that are planned with precision, executed flawlessly and returned to service in the shortest possible time.

We are building Accenture’s Turnaround Modernization capability to help refining and petrochemical operators reinvent the end-to-end turnaround process with data, AI and digital technology – from AI-assisted scope development and scheduling to connected, real-time execution. We are looking for a Manager who pairs hands-on turnaround experience with a drive to change how turnarounds are delivered, to help lead that build – shaping our offerings, delivering for clients and growing a team of turnaround and technology specialists.

THE WORK:

You will support refining and petrochemical clients across the full turnaround lifecycle, addressing their issues related to:

  • Turnaround Strategy & Readiness – TAR interval and run-length optimization, deferral risk assessment, and alignment of turnaround strategy with reliability, integrity and commercial (margin) objectives
  • Scope Definition & Challenge – worklist development, risk-based inspection (RBI) and integrity inputs, scope challenge to remove non-value-adding work, and scope freeze discipline
  • Planning & Scheduling Excellence – front-end loading and milestone readiness, detailed work pack development, critical path and near-critical path optimization, resource leveling and integrated contractor schedules
  • Execution & Control – daily progress measurement, earned value and productivity tracking, discovery and emergent work management, and schedule recovery to protect mechanical completion and startup dates
  • Materials, Contractor & Logistics Readiness – long-lead procurement, kitting and laydown planning, contractor mobilization and site logistics
  • Safe Shutdown & Startup – integration of operations handover, isolations, permit to work and pre-startup activities to achieve a safe, on-time return to service
  • Post-Turnaround Review – close-out, lessons learned capture and knowledge transfer into the next turnaround cycle
  • Turnaround Governance & Performance – governance across both the preparation and execution phases, including stage-gate reviews and readiness assurance, integrated cost and schedule controls, scope and change control, performance reporting, benchmarking and continuous improvement
  • Risk Management – applying clients’ existing risk management guidelines or establishing a risk management process to identify potential risks to safety, EHS, cost and duration targets, and working with clients to mitigate those risks, including contingency planning
  • Operating Model, Ways of Working & Adoption – turnaround organization and governance, roles and decision rights, integrated owner-contractor ways of working, process and workflow redesign, change management, field adoption, training and capability building

You will spot, isolate, and solve turnaround performance problems by applying technology and digital solutions, using your skills in:

  • Turnaround Modernization – designing the digitally enabled future state of the end-to-end turnaround process and identifying where technology creates the most schedule, cost and safety value
  • AI-Assisted Scope Development – applying AI at the start of turnaround preparation to build and challenge worklists from inspection, reliability and maintenance history data, reducing turnaround cost, duration and preparation effort well ahead of final scope review
  • Digital Planning & Scheduling – AI-assisted schedule optimization, automated work pack generation, and integration of scheduling tools (e.g., Primavera P6) with EAM/CMMS platforms (e.g., SAP PM/S/4HANA, IBM Maximo)
  • AI-Assisted Training & Onboarding – using AI to determine onboarding and training requirements from the finalized scope and to assemble the required safety, training and onboarding documentation for contractors and site personnel
  • Connected Worker & Real-Time Execution – mobile work execution, digital permitting, wearables, IoT sensors, drone and robotic inspection, and live progress dashboards and control towers
  • Data, Analytics & AI – digital twins, predictive analytics for discovery and emergent work, and generative and agentic AI for final scope review, planning and execution support
  • Business Case & Value Realization – quantifying the value of schedule compression and cost avoidance, building the case for change and tracking benefits through execution

You will also, throughout your work, have opportunities to:

  • Lead the development of Accenture’s Turnaround Modernization capabilities and offerings – points of view, solution architecture, assets and accelerators, and ecosystem partnerships
  • Act as a turnaround subject matter expert in client conversations, helping identify client needs, shape solutions and articulate the value of turnaround modernization
  • Lead small to mid-sized teams (3-8) of consultants, engineers and technologists with diverse backgrounds, skills and knowledge
  • Effectively manage and coach others, collaborating with clients, internal teams and ecosystem partners such as software providers and turnaround contractors
  • Support client sales origination, proposal development and thought leadership development
  • Challenge legacy ways of working using constructive techniques that fuel client growth
  • Drive a positive impact in the communities where we work and live

Travel may be required for this role. The amount of travel will vary from 0 to 100% depending on business need and client requirements.

  • Leadership experience on at least one major turnaround, with an understanding of how maintenance, reliability and asset integrity influence turnaround strategy and scope
  • Experience improving turnaround and/or maintenance performance through process, data, digital and AI solutions, including working knowledge of planning, scheduling and/or EAM/CMMS platforms such as Primavera P6, SAP or IBM Maximo
