Be a part of a world-class academic healthcare system, UChicago Medicine, as a Public Safety Supervisor at our Hyde Park Location. This position is a 100% onsite opportunity. You will need to be based in the greater Chicagoland area.
The Public Safety Supervisor provides and manages a safe environment for employees, patients, visitors and medical staff through the use of uniformed patrols, emergency response, customer service and enforcement of policies and procedures at all UCMC facilities. A key function of this position is to oversee the daily operations of the Public Safety Department. The Public Safety Supervisor provides assistance with supervision of Public Safety Coordinators and Public Safety Officers, leads investigations and serves as a training officer for personnel. The position will safeguard medical center property, equipment and supplies. The position will be required to work as a uniformed Public Safety Officer, in order to supplement staff on all shifts, as needed.
Essential Job Functions
- Provides direct supervision for all staff assigned to them; Prepares work schedules and shift assignments; Assists with the maintenance and testing of all security related systems and vehicles; Reviews all incident reports for accuracy and content; Provides daily activity summary for the Director of Public Safety and Parking; Oversees training and development of new hires; Ensures all staff are compliant with required licensing, training and competencies.
- Demonstrates the ability to respond positively to change in order to maximize the opportunity, minimize the problem and provide support to staff during times of change. Displays a positive and supportive attitude and represents the department and UCMC in a positive manner. The ability to deal effectively, empathetically and professionally with patients, visitors and staff. Treat all people with dignity and maintain a courteous and pleasant attitude to all patients, visitors and staff.
- Sets and attains goals for improving personal performance. Seeks opportunities for staff and individual enhancement of knowledge, skills and abilities.
- Respond to all emergency situations (fire, bomb threat, combative patient, armed subject, lockdowns, etc.) on campus that require immediate attention in a safe and timely manner.
- Coordinate with law enforcement and fire service personnel responding to campus.
- Investigate and document safety hazards or criminal incidents that occur. Lead investigations as assigned by the Director of Public Safety and Parking.
- Assists patients and visitors are requested.
- Represents the Hospitals in court when required.
- In conjunction with the University Police Department, assists with investigations of all criminal and/or suspicious occurrences in the medical center.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma required.
- 2 years of college coursework in law enforcement preferred.
- 3 years supervisory experience required.
- Must obtain IAHSS Basic Certification within six (6) months of employment IAHSS Advanced Certification within nine (9) months of employment and IAHSS Supervisor Certification within 12 months of employment.
- Valid Driver’s License.
- Defensive Tactics & Handcuffing certifications (Completed upon hire).
- CPI Certification (Completed upon hire).
- Must complete required FEMA ICS 100, 200, 700 & 800 courses within one year of appointment.
- Basic level of personal computer skills, to include word processing/spreadsheet applications.
- Basic knowledge of security access systems. On the job training provided for UCMC security systems.

Compensation & Benefits Overview
UChicago Medicine is committed to transparency in compensation and benefits. The pay range provided reflects the anticipated wage or salary reasonably expected to be offered for the position.
The pay range is based on a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and is reflective of current market data, reviewed on an annual basis. Compensation offered at the time of hire will vary based on candidate qualifications and experience and organizational considerations, such as internal equity. Pay ranges for employees subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements are negotiated by the medical center and their respective union.
