Substation Apprentice 1st Year - Substation Technician

Entergy seeks a Substation Apprentice 1st Year in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Under close supervision, the apprentice in training performs less difficult tasks and assists others in high and low voltage work involved in the construction, operation, maintenance, and repair of electric transmission and distribution substations and related equipment. The role requires the ability to obtain Substation switchman certification, read and follow technical manuals, understand AC and DC schematics and construction drawings, and be familiar with hydraulic and pneumatic equipment. The apprentice must be able to climb structures and ladders, operate lift trucks, perform routine and emergency maintenance, testing, initial installation, and restoration of substations and related equipment, and conduct substation switching with safe tagging and grounding procedures. Availability for 24-hour callouts and extended hours is required. A valid Class A CDL within 180 days is necessary. The position involves operating company vehicles and equipment as intended, maintaining good physical condition (able to lift 100 pounds), solid hand-eye coordination and color vision, strong interpersonal, computer, and communication skills, and the ability to work independently and with customers. The candidate must be able to work near energized equipment safely and prepare regulatory compliance reports and records.

Responsibilities

• Perform tasks under close supervision related to construction, operation, maintenance, and repair of substations and related equipment.
• Assist others in high and low voltage work and be willing to perform less difficult tasks as directed.
• Obtain Substation switchman certification and read/interpret technical manuals, wiring diagrams, schematics, and construction drawings.
• Work with hydraulic and pneumatic equipment; climb structures and ladders; operate lift trucks.
• Conduct routine and emergency maintenance, testing, installation, restoration, and substation switching with proper tagging and grounding.
• Be available for 24-hour callouts and extended hours; maintain vehicle and equipment operation per company purposes.
• Prepare reports and records in compliance with regulatory requirements.
• Demonstrate good physical condition, dexterity, color vision, and interpersonal skills; communicate effectively in written and verbal form; work with coworkers and customers.
• Maintain safety practices when working near energized equipment and participate in safety meetings.
• Comply with company safety rules and be able to render first aid and operate firefighting equipment as needed.

Requirements

• Education: High school diploma or GED.
• Experience and qualifications: Willingness to follow safety rules, administer practical first aid and resuscitation methods, operate firefighting equipment, and obtain/hold a valid Class A CDL within a specified time. Knowledge of line and substation materials, and use of related construction tools and equipment, is required.
• Certification and progression: Helper 1st Year requires 0 years of experience; Substation Apprentice 1st Year requires at least 1 year as a qualified Helper or equivalent experience; Substation Apprentice 2nd Year requires at least 1 year as 1st Year or equivalent; Substation Apprentice 3rd Year requires at least 1 year as 2nd Year or equivalent; Substation Apprentice 4th Year requires at least 1 year as 3rd Year or equivalent; Substation Technician requires at least 1 year as 4th Year or equivalent.
