Description

The Law Clerk Intern will participate in a semester-long experiential learning opportunity within the Office of General Counsel, gaining exposure to legal research, legal writing, public higher education law, ethics, governance, contracts, public records, and professional development.

Working under the guidance of the Office of General Counsel, the intern will engage in meaningful legal and professional assignments while developing an understanding of how legal counsel supports the operations and governance of a public higher education institution. The internship is designed to connect academic learning with practical experience while helping the student develop professional competencies, clarify career interests, and build a foundation for continued growth within the legal profession.

Examples of Duties

Conduct legal research related to matters relevant to public higher education and institutional operations.

Draft, review, and revise legal research and writing products under appropriate supervision.

Research and monitor developments in legal news, legislation, and U.S. Supreme Court decisions.

Participate in weekly meetings to discuss assignments, work products, legal developments, questions, and professional learning.

Develop an understanding of legal and ethical considerations relevant to public higher education.

Gain exposure to institutional governance, contracts, public records, and other areas of legal practice within a higher education environment.

Receive and apply feedback on legal research, writing, communication, and professional performance.

Identify and pursue opportunities for legal and professional development, including relevant training, networking, mentorship, and educational opportunities.

Communicate professional interests and career goals while developing relationships with legal and campus professionals.

Maintain an internship activity log and professional development portfolio documenting learning, experiences, and growth.

Complete a professional development plan focused on continued growth and career preparation within the legal profession.

Demonstrate professionalism, initiative, curiosity, ethical conduct, and responsiveness in completing assigned responsibilities.

Any other duties as assigned by the Officer of the General Counsel supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

Current New College of Florida student in good academic and conduct standing
