Job title: Steam Fitter 'A'

About the Role The Steam Fitter 'A' will perform skilled steamfitting work within Syracuse University's Facilities Services, planning and executing install, maintenance and repair of steam and chilled water systems on campus. The role requires independent judgment, advanced trade knowledge, and on-site collaboration with campus colleagues to support the university’s operations.

What You'll Do

  • Plan, layout and install new and replacement steam and chilled water systems.
  • Install boilers, thread or weld piping for heating, steam reduction stations, fire protection systems.
  • Maintain and repair existing systems.
  • Inspect, install and repair a variety of pneumatic, electrical and combination valves (most electrical work done by others).
  • Chemically treat water for all systems as instructed.
  • Install steam and chilled water pipe insulation.
  • Plan and perform preventive maintenance duties such as lubricating pumps.
  • May be required to perform duties of HVAC Mechanic.

What We're Looking For

  • Education: high school diploma or equivalent; advanced knowledge of the steamfitting trade equivalent to complete accredited apprentice training; at least five years of additional practical experience.
  • Must provide own hand tools including pipe wrenches up to 14 inches, Allen, crescent and open-end wrenches, assorted screwdrivers, files and chisels, hack saw, hammer, pump pliers, tube cutter and benzomatic torch, etc.; valid driver’s license with ability to operate both manual and automatic transmission vehicles.
  • Experience with piping materials and installation: schedule #40 and #80 black pipe, type L copper, hard copper, plastic tubing; ability to read diagrams/blueprints and troubleshoot.
  • Physical requirements: standing for long periods; bending, stooping, twisting; able to lift up to 50 pounds and push/pull up to 75 pounds; climb ladders/scaffolds; work in extreme heat; operate power tools.
  • On-campus, in-person work environment and willingness to collaborate with campus personnel.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Pay range: $32.365-$35.960 per hour.
