Job title: Staff Software Engineer - Backend

About the Role Databricks backend-focused software engineers design, implement, test, and operate micro-services for the Databricks platform. You will work with product management to prioritize and deliver scalable data-driven services, writing software in Scala/Java, building data pipelines with Spark and Kafka, and integrating with cloud APIs. Our teams tackle large-scale distributed systems with security, reliability, and cloud-agnostic concerns.

What You'll Do

  • Write software in Scala/Java
  • Build data pipelines with Apache Spark and Apache Kafka
  • Design, implement, test, and operate microservices for the Databricks platform
  • Integrate with third-party applications and cloud APIs (AWS, Azure, CloudFormation, Terraform)
  • Collaborate with product managers and cross-functional teams
  • Ensure security and reliability in cloud-scale deployments

What We're Looking For

  • BS/MS/PhD in Computer Science or related field
  • 10+ years production experience in Java, Scala, C++, or similar
  • Experience architecting, developing, deploying, and operating large-scale distributed systems
  • Experience with SaaS or Service-Oriented Architectures (SOA)
  • Proficient in SQL; strong security mindset; experience with data handling sensitive data
  • Experience with cloud technologies (AWS, Azure, GCP), Docker, Kubernetes
  • Comfortable working toward multi-year vision with incremental deliverables

Nice to Have

  • Experience with MLflow and machine-learning tooling

Compensation & Benefits

  • Local Pay Range $182,400—$247,000 USD
  • Total compensation may include annual performance bonus, equity, and benefits
