Job title: Staff Software Engineer - Backend

About the Role As a software engineer with a backend focus, you will work with your team to build infrastructure for the Databricks platform at scale. The impact you'll have spans foundational infrastructure platforms, service platforms, and machine learning infrastructure across regions and cloud providers. Our current focus includes optimizing the Rust development experience across the organization.

What You'll Do

  • Collaborate with teams to design and build scalable backend infrastructure for Databricks across regions and cloud providers.
  • Develop and operate large-scale, distributed backend systems; drive architectural decisions and guide teams through complex challenges.
  • Create tools and processes that drive engineering efficiency, improve the developer experience, and support automated release pipelines and test automation.
  • Enhance tooling and developer experience across languages, linters, IDEs, remote development environments, and security practices.
  • Contribute to infrastructure, security, and data handling best practices in a cloud-native environment (Kubernetes, AWS, Azure, or GCP).

What We're Looking For

  • 8+ years of professional software development experience.
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Proficiency in one or more backend languages such as Java, Scala, or Go.
  • Hands-on experience in developing and operating large-scale, critical distributed backend systems.
  • Demonstrated leadership across project phases with the ability to drive architectural decisions and guide teams.
  • Experience mentoring engineers, influencing best practices, and fostering collaboration.
  • Self-driven with a strong focus on delivering impact through team collaboration.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to drive alignment and contribute to technical documentation and strategy.
  • Experience with infrastructure systems, security, and sensitive data, plus familiarity with Kubernetes or cloud platforms like AWS, Azure, or GCP.

Nice to Have

  • Experience optimizing the Rust development experience or contributing to Rust tooling.
  • Broad experience with cloud-native architectures and platform automation.
