Job title: Staff Machine Learning Engineer

About the Role Join Databricks' Applied AI team to shape and deploy GenAI-powered features across products like Databricks Assistant and AI/BI Genie. You will drive state-of-the-art model development, data tooling, and scalable backend systems to improve AI-driven user experiences.

What You'll Do

• Shape the direction of applied AI areas and intelligence features in our products.
• Drive development and deployment of state-of-the-art AI models and systems that power Databricks' GenAI products.
• Develop data collection, fine-tuning, and LLM techniques for task/domain optimization.
• Design and implement ML pipelines for data preprocessing, feature engineering, model training, hyperparameter tuning, and evaluation.
• Collaborate with AI researchers, ML engineers, and product teams to deliver impactful AI solutions.
• Build scalable backend systems to support GenAI products, and develop robust logging, telemetry, and evaluation harnesses for reliable model performance.

What We're Looking For

• 2-8 years of machine learning engineering experience in high-velocity, high-growth environments (equivalent via strong academic ML research considered).
• Strong track record with language modeling technologies; generative and embedding techniques, modern architectures, fine-tuning data, and evaluation benchmarks.
• Proficiency in Python, TensorFlow/PyTorch, and scalable ML architectures.
• Ability to drive end-to-end model development from research/prototyping to deployment and monitoring.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills; strong coding and software engineering practices (testing, reviews, deployment).
• Bonus: experience with LLM fine-tuning, prompt engineering, and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG).

Nice to Have

Compensation & Benefits

• Local Pay Range: $190,000—$285,000 USD per year. The total compensation package may also include eligibility for annual performance bonus, equity, and the benefits listed above.
• We are open to employees working from our Mountain View, CA office for this position.
