Staff Machine Learning Engineer, CustomerLake (ML/LLM)

databricks
New York City, NY
On-siteUSD 192,000 - 260,000 / year

About this role

About the Role Databricks is building CustomerLake, a Customer Data Platform for enterprise-grade ML/AI personalization. As one of the first engineers in the NYC office, you will help shape a 0-to-1 product, set technical foundations, and drive production ML/LLM capabilities that translate data into real business value.

What You'll Do

  • Evaluate ML and LLM approaches for CustomerLake's personalization use cases, push models forward, and continuously improve quality
  • Deep-dive into production behavior: inspect traces, understand model reasoning, and tune accordingly
  • Build the platform and evaluation framework enabling customers to optimize business outcomes (purchases, retention, product usage) rather than vanity metrics
  • Push the team toward new directions and novel methods worth tackling
  • Partner with product management, engineering, and design to turn ambiguous customer problems into scalable, trustworthy solutions
  • Set technical foundations and best practices for ML/AI personalization as the product evolves into multiple roles over the next 1-2 years

What We're Looking For

  • 10+ years of engineering experience across the full ML/AI product lifecycle
  • Hands-on experience building and evaluating ML models and/or LLM systems for real product/business use cases
  • Experience with personalization based on customer behavior (ideal) or transactions (acceptable)
  • Proficiency in Python and modern ML frameworks (e.g., PyTorch) with hands-on model evaluation and monitoring in production
  • Familiarity with LLMs and generative AI, including retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), prompt design, fine-tuning, and evaluation
  • Demonstrated product mindset: ability to translate ambiguous problems into scrappy MVPs and iterate quickly on data and user feedback
  • High ownership and bias for action in 0-to-1 environments
  • Nice to have: Martech experience with analytical/go-to-market/business angle
  • Nice to have: academic or research background

Nice to Have

  • Martech experience with analytical angle (go-to-market or business use case)
  • Academic or research background that can help innovate and develop novel methods

Compensation & Benefits

  • Local Pay Range $192,000—$260,000 USD
  • Eligible for annual performance bonus, equity, and benefits listed above
  • Benefits details vary by region; check the company page for specifics.
