About the Role Milwaukee Tool is seeking a Staff Industrial Designer - Storage to shape innovative products that solve real user needs and advance our design language. This mid-level role is ideal for a curious, hands-on designer with 3+ years of professional experience who thrives in fast-paced product development and works on expanding a growing system of storage and accessories. You will collaborate with senior designers, engineering, marketing, and research teams to bring impactful, user-driven products to life.
What You'll Do
- Concept Generation: Explore ideas through ideation, competitive assessments, and identification of unmet user needs; collaborate with future conceptual teams to explore Milwaukee's future.
- Design Development: Create designs using paper and digital sketching, technical drawings, renderings, 2D illustrations, 3D CAD, and hand-built models; consider manufacturing and cost; develop products that fit into a complex system.
- Visual Storytelling: Communicate design intent through visual storytelling to gain acceptance from the project team.
- Innovation: Be curious and inject innovation into programs and tasks.
- Form Development: Demonstrate strong understanding of form development and the ability to create designs without predecessors.
- Collaboration: Participate in brainstorming and concept generation events; collaborate with cross-functional teams (marketing and engineering); attend weekly meetings and lead design reviews with process partners.
- Documentation: Create renderings, models, mechanical drawings, and written reports; present designs for milestone approval.
- Ergonomics and Usability: Apply fundamentals of ergonomics and usability to product solutions.
- Research Participation: Engage with internal research, observe job sites, and translate observations into insights with Design Research and Product Management.
- Construction, Materials & VBL Guidelines: Propose construction, mechanisms, materials, finishes, and manufacturing processes; ensure compliance with Milwaukee's visual brand language (VBL).
- Manufacturing Integration: Partner with engineering and suppliers to maintain design intent through manufacturing; optimize for injection molding, assembly, and scalable production while balancing cost, quality, and performance.
- Trend Monitoring: Monitor design trends in form, materials, technology.
- Project Management: Manage multiple projects concurrently and adapt to changing directions.
What We're Looking For
- Minimum of 3 years of professional design experience.
- Strong understanding of form development and ability to innovate.
- Proficiency in paper and digital sketching, technical drawings, renderings, 2D illustrations, 3D CAD, and model making.
- Excellent communication skills for presentations, visual storytelling, and working with global partners.
- Ability to work on multiple projects concurrently and adapt to changes quickly.
- Knowledge of ergonomics, usability, and manufacturing processes.
Nice to Have
- Familiarity with Milwaukee products and use of tools is a plus.
