Staff Engineer

About the Role Factorial is redefining AI-powered business management by making AI a core part of how people work. We’re looking for Staff Engineers to lead that shift, owning end-to-end AI-driven product experiences and shaping our engineering culture.

What You'll Do

• Define how we build AI at scale: shape design, build, evaluate, and run AI-native product experiences, ensuring reliability, compliance, and business value.
• Lead Spec-Driven Development for AI: push for teams to define what "good" looks like before building, with explicit behaviors, constraints, edge cases, and success criteria.
• Build reusable AI foundations: create shared capabilities and abstractions that scale, stay secure, and are easy to govern.
• Design and evolve AI Skills: modular, reusable AI components that automate real workflows and take safe, traceable actions, especially where finance is involved.
• Establish robust evaluation frameworks: automated and human-in-the-loop evaluations to measure quality, safety, and reliability.
• Shape Retrieval-Augmented Generation strategies: ground AI in trusted data, balancing probabilistic models with deterministic sources of truth while ensuring compliance and accuracy.
• Design human-in-the-loop and agentic workflows: architect workflows that combine LLMs, rules, and user oversight for transparent automation.
• Own systems end-to-end: from initial problem discussions to production rollout and long-term maintenance.
• Stay deeply connected to customers: engage with customers to understand real problems and feed insights back into the product.
• Partner with Product, Design, and Leadership: ensure AI is woven into the product and roadmaps, not grafted on top.
• Raise the bar across the company: mentoring, hiring, and improving engineering culture.

What We're Looking For

• Solid depth in both backend and frontend software engineering.
• Experience with cloud platforms like AWS, Azure, or GCP.
• Shipped real products to production, not just prototypes.
• Strong understanding of APIs, cloud platforms, and system design.
• Technical and cultural leadership; high standards and accountability.
• Ability to push back on non-serving processes and drive adoption of useful abstractions.
• Built real AI-powered systems or workflows, not just tinkered with.
• Delivered impactful work with measurable results.
• Lead key technical decisions and create reusable foundations others can build on.
• Clear English communication; Spanish is a plus.
