Staff Accountant

We are looking for a motivated Staff Accountant to join a growing insurance organization in Bergen County, NJ, New York. This role is well suited for an accounting specialist with early-career experience who wants to expand their skills across core financial operations in a collaborative setting. The position offers broad exposure to general accounting activities, reporting support, and process improvement work while building a strong foundation for long-term career growth.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to monthly and annual closing activities by helping organize entries, schedules, and supporting documentation.

  • Record financial transactions through accurate journal entries and complete reconciliations for key accounts.

  • Review cash activity and reconcile bank and balance sheet accounts to ensure records remain current and reliable.

  • Provide day-to-day support for payable and receivable processes, helping maintain timely and accurate transaction flow.

  • Preserve the accuracy of the general ledger by identifying inconsistencies and resolving issues promptly.

  • Assist in preparing internal financial reports and month-end support schedules for the accounting team.

  • Examine account activity, research variances, and follow through on discrepancies to support accurate reporting.

  • Help respond to audit inquiries and year-end documentation needs by gathering and organizing required materials.

  • Take part in workflow enhancements and ad hoc accounting projects that improve efficiency and controls.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field.

  • At least 2 years of accounting experience; internship experience may also be considered.

  • Working knowledge of core accounting practices and financial recordkeeping principles.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel for analysis, reconciliation, and reporting tasks.

  • Experience preparing journal entries and working within a general ledger environment.

  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.

  • High level of accuracy, attention to detail, and accountability in daily work.

  • Ability to manage responsibilities independently while also collaborating effectively with a team.
