Job title: Sr. Underwriter or Assistant Vice President, Commercial Surety
About the Role Sompo seeks a Sr. Underwriter or Assistant Vice President for Commercial Surety to lead underwriting, pricing, and portfolio management across key markets. This role can be based in Scottsdale, AZ; Los Angeles, CA; or Denver, CO, and focuses on risk acceptability, financial analysis, and relationship management to drive profitable growth.
What You'll Do
- Review submissions and financial requirements to determine acceptability of risk in accordance with guidelines and standards.
- Analyze the financial stability, creditworthiness, and experience (capacity) of applicants to determine likelihood of fulfilling bond obligations.
- Analyze financial statements, credit reports, and other financial information for new and existing accounts to assess credit quality.
- Understand pricing components and rating methodology; use predictive modeling tools to price risk based on financial and competitive analysis.
- Apply underwriting tools and guidelines to ensure compliance; prepare or analyze materials on adverse decisions, rate appeals, and declinations to drive results.
- Manage assigned portfolio to achieve gross written premium, profitability, rate, retention, product mix, and new business goals; develop producer relationships to build pipeline.
- Develop distributor-specific plans, monitor performance, and adjust plans to maintain a robust pipeline for future growth. Drive effective relationship management and client activities to secure commitments.
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor’s degree preferred; AFSB preferred.
- Minimum 5+ years of Surety underwriting experience for Sr. Underwriter; 7-10+ years for AVP.
- Advanced knowledge of Surety underwriting, techniques, and guidelines; strong financial acumen and credit analysis.
- Expert knowledge of underwriting processes, coverages, and tools to evaluate information for renewals and new business.
- Demonstrated ability to build and grow a profitable book of business and pipeline; ability to uncover customer needs and close deals.

Compensation & Benefits
- Salary Range: $125,000 - $200,000 USD per year.
