Job title: Sr. Scientist - Veterinary Pathologist

About the Role The Sr. Scientist - Veterinary Pathologist will provide pathology, histology, and clinical pathology support for animal studies conducted at IRF-Frederick as part of the Pathology Core. The role includes necropsy, tissue processing, IHC/ISH and specialized staining, data interpretation, and preparation of written reports and manuscript support. The work supports organoid/organ-chip programs and opportunities for independent research within project scope.

What You'll Do

  • Provide pathology and histology support for animal studies, including necropsies, data capture, and reporting.
  • Perform postmortem examinations in the BSL-4 containment laboratory and document gross observations/diagnoses.
  • Conduct histology/immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, histomorphometry, and digital pathology operations; analyze and interpret tissue slides.
  • Develop comprehensive written reports and support manuscript preparation for peer‑reviewed publications and presentations.
  • Collaborate with research staff and project leads; pursue own research interests within project scope with concurrence.
  • Ensure compliance with biosafety, occupational health, and study protocols; travel 0‑10% as required.
  • Schedule management and potential telework if approved.

What We're Looking For

  • Board-certified Veterinary Pathologist (DVM, ACVP); PhD preferred.
  • Experience in biocontainment (BSL-3 or BSL-4); BSL-4 experience preferred.
  • Ability to work in a BSL-4 setting with select agents; enrolled in the NIAID-IRF Frederick Biosurety program and able to pass/maintain Tier-III security clearance.
  • Proficiency in necropsy, histology, immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, histomorphometry, and digital pathology.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills; demonstrated ability to contribute to manuscripts.
  • Education: Doctorate required; PhD preferred (DVM/ACVP certification with doctorate).

Nice to Have

  • Experience supporting organoid or organ-chip research programs.
  • Additional advanced degrees or related research experience.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Hourly pay: $99.43 for up to 40 hours/week.
