About this role
About the Role We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled scientist to join Corning's Inorganic Material Mechanics team in the Product Reliability Technology directorate. The role focuses on advancing fundamental mechanical behavior models, reliability methodologies, and characterization techniques for glass, glass-ceramics, ceramics, and thin optical films, supporting core business units such as Optical Communications and Mobile Electronics. What You'll Do
- Use knowledge of physics and probabilistic methods to build a deep understanding of materials and processes across Corning’s Market Access Platforms and R&D.
- Apply solid mechanics, fracture mechanics, materials science, numerical methods, and reliability analysis to solve early-stage problems, inform product design, and predict performance.
- Develop experiments to understand mechanical behavior of components and enhance product reliability; validate models through surrogate tests.
- Perform mechanical characterization of brittle materials to evaluate fundamental properties and responses.
- Design and/or synthesize materials to meet mechanical/reliability requirements for IP, inventions, exploratory work, and hypothesis testing.
- Use existing tools and develop new experimental, analytical, and numerical models to resolve customer problems.
- Collaborate with simulation and experimental scientists/engineers across research, development, and engineering.
- Communicate results clearly in oral and written English.
- Protect Corning’s intellectual property. What We're Looking For
- Strong background in mechanical or materials engineering with experience in mechanics, materials characterization, and reliability.
- Experience applying physics, probabilistic methods, solid/fracture mechanics, numerical methods, and/or reliability analysis to understand and predict material behavior.
- Proven ability to design, execute, and interpret mechanical experiments and validate models.
- Familiarity with brittle materials (glass, glass-ceramics, ceramics, thin optical films) and the associated mechanical properties.
- Excellent collaboration and communication skills and ability to work across research, development, and engineering teams.
